New Blood old question

Good Afternoon all!

Just found your forum and website.
I am a retired military member who is currently living north of Peoria in Kewanee. I have always been interested in MD and at one time in my former life did own an old Bounty Hunter.
Well now that I have a little more time on my hands I have begun looking into getting back in to this hobby. One thing that I find totally overwhelming is all the different units available today. They have changed an incredible amount since the early 80's.
So I am looking for a little advice from the group to see if you can help me make the decision.
I have about $500 or so to invest into a new unit and would like to know what your views and opinions are on some units for our soil conditions and overall use for here in Illinois.
I have been looking at the Garrett 350 for a starter unit. Wise decision??
I would like to get my feet wet just bouncing around local parks and trying to attend some of your events or meetings down in P-town.

Thanks for any help and advice all of you can give me.

I have heard nothing but the best about this club. I have thought about joining myself but at this time I am quite busy. There are many good detectors out there. The key is to learn the machine. I am out of date on newer detectors but I am sure you will receive some good advice from this forum. By the way.....I live in Galva. Good hunting.

Garrett 350 is a good unit. You could come to one of our hunts and try some detectors. I don't recommend a store detector until you have had a chance to talk to a few hunters. We have hunts all the time and you could hunt along side our club but no prizes for finds unless you wish to join. We do have a hunt this Saturday but you would have to contact the Hunt Chair for permission to come, location and times. Nothing is posted on line due to problems with loners destroying the grounds and then we show up and are blamed. Send hunt chair Larry (IL) a private message. Or you could ask for a get together somewhere and see who shows with what. We even have a couple of camp outs planned this spring.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I am hoping to get something in the next week or so and would love to find someone locally to help/assist in learning the area and use of a new machine.
Maybe we might be able to get together sometime and go out.
Thanks again

Thanks for the quick reply.
I might just take you up on that.
I appreciate any help I can get. I hope to be free Saturday if possible I will contact Larry.

Thanks again

If decide you would like to attend the club hunt I have a Fisher F4 that I could bring for you to try out. Its less than a year old and a great machine. I would put it in about the same class as the Garret 350. I have found LOTS of great stuff with it. I'm sure I could round up a pin pointer for you to use also.

Welcome to the forum and to the wonderful world of MD. Yes, we do have a great PATH membership and it's very friendly and willing to help out in any way. We would love to hunt along side of you and give you a few pointers as to what type of machine would suit you best. I'm sure you'll hear from Larry soon. He had a long night of working and trying to catch up on some Z's. HH, Nancy

Hi, my name is Dave and I live in Wyoming IL. My phone number is 695 -5291. I usually go to Kewanee about once a week. I might even be there today or tomorrow, but I need to stay near the house right now to get the results of a job interview. Give me a call and perhaps we can get together this week.

Welcome to the PATH forum and I just sent you an Email with the hunt location and time inviting you to join us for some hunting, comradery and good eats at half time. I hope you can come.

Thank you everyone for the warm invite.
I am trying to do everything I can to show up on Saturday. Being Easter weekend it might be a challenge to get out of the house... ha.. But I will let one of you know if I am coming.
I appreciate the kindness and all of your help. Looking forward to meeting all of you.

Thanks

Welcome, I live in Kewanee also and would be glad to share some local knowledge. As far as detectors go, I am a Minelab user and have little experience with other machines. I have heard positive things about the Ace. Sned me a pm if you would like to hunt some time. I'm out of town until after Easter.
