New BHID300, First Impressions

Picked up the BHID300 from my local dealer tonite. All parts and papers included. Has the orange seals and feels very solid.

Assembly was quick and the unit has the long cable for easy hip/chest mounting. All fittings are tight with no play. Impressed by the battery box seal and I just don't see any way for water to get in if the seal is in properly.

Noticed right off that the coil felt a little heavy but if it gets to be a problem there's always the straight shaft route. Set up makes for a large sweep radius and even with 50% overlap a lot of ground/sand can be covered in a short time.

Took it out back for a little test drive and found I really like it. Sounds are somewhat different than I'm used to but the tones seem to suit my old hard of hearing ears. Set it up in Disc. at first to see just what the fixed Disc. will reject. Lots of nails and other old construction tidbits close to the house but the BHID300 appeared to handle most of it. Ground here is what might be called hot but the machine ground balanced quickly and easily. Considering the ground here, I thought trying to super tune would cause a bunch of instability but it took to the set up straight away.

I'll take it to my test garden tomorrow;... at least what's left after my Border Collie got interested. Depending on the weather, I might take it to the local beach for dry sand tryouts. Water is still frozen.

Looks like the BHID300 will meet or exceed my expectations. HH

I've got the 9.5 crosshair coil model, deep, deep in the am mode in the wetsalt sand. I can't imagine using the 12 inch coil prob pull my shoulder out diggin!! Using it is disc works well but the am "Gobble-Gobble Gold" program is super deep! Try it and see!

listen for small short rises in the threshold that don't ID. Sometimes iron but sometimes really small deep targets. I found a thin brass ring that was deep over 8 inches and old like that. Also if the machine dosen't know what the target is it won't lie or guess just raises the threshold but if you get even a flick of red on the led it's iron.

R-n-R...you are correct. I have found lots of deep dimes and other small targets when there is a threshold change and none of the lights flash. It's these very small threshold changes that are soft sounding that tend to be deep, small targets. Yes, they could be iron, but I found out that in all metal mode, with the Gobble method of re-grounding with the sensitivity turned all the way up, is where you find the real deep targets.

I almost never use the discriminate mode on my BHID300 now with the ability to ID most targets with the lights, and now finding out that the deepies tend to be only threshold changes without any lights.

Tried a little experiment with the threshold volume. Set it to where I could just hear it but loud enough to hear any change. Asked my wife to listen and tell me how loud it sounded to her. She has good hearing and it sounded faint to her, so that tells me it's adjusted about right to pick up stuff at the machines max depth. Tone seems low enough that my old, aircraft carrier flight deck/air traffic controller, ears can handle it.

Weather has been pretty rough as of late with winds of 60 or 70 mph at times. Combine that with cold temps and checking out the BHID will have to wait. It's supposed to warm up in the near future so I'll check out the sand at the local beach.

Hoping to give the BHID a real workout shortly J.C. and will post something if it's worthwhile.

R-n-R: If you live near Marquette let me know as I might have some hunting info for you.

Ron...I will be taking the BHID300 to the beach either Sunday or Monday. Hope I can post some good finds too if I don't freeze !

I've done okwith the beach hunter, but many beaches it can't handle because of the iron infestation. Not sure if i'll keep her, as I live right next to Lake Erie, and most of the beaches have alot of iron in them.

I've got the BHID and the Tesoro Stingray 2 going to see which one works the best and keep it.
