New BH Time Ranger

New member
My new Time Ranger will be arriving 10/9/09 and I am raring to go. I have been granted permission to hunt an old homesite which is vacant as of this week. The old house that was there was built in the early 20's and was just moved off the property this past Tuesday. It had been lived in up to about a month ago by original owner family members. From the looks of the property it is looking very promising for some decent finds either coins/relics either would be fantastic. I look forward to posting my finds and reporting on the performance of the Time Ranger. Happy Hunting to all.

I just got permission to hunt a house that was built in the year 1900, I thought the same as you, going to be great. But what I found was another thing, not trying to burst your bubble, but the amount of trash I found on the site was overwhelming. Every place I swung was a iron hit, every so many inches was iron. I am going to save that place until I get a detector that has iron masking on it. I tried to use my BH505 but didn't bring any up that was any good. I wish you the best of luck, but I have found house's that old will contain alot of trash, so go slow and take your time. If you have the time and want to dig every target and im sure you will come up with something. good luck.

Hi RickyJ. I would love to have a home site from the 20's to hunt. As bountyhunter1972 said, there tends to be a lot of trash metal accumulated in the ground over nearly 90 years. However, you will love the Time Ranger's ability to discriminate out 4 levels of iron, foil, and most aluminum trash.

I suggest that you start out hunting in P1 (program 1) which discs out iron and foil. If you come across too many pulltabs and screw caps you can use P2 or P3. Just keep in mind that if you aren't digging the nickel and tab signals you will miss most gold.

If you have plenty of time to go back over the ground several times, be methodical. On the first pass cover the ground using a high level of discrimination like P3 (Program 3) which will disc out all 4 iron levels, foil, pulltabs, screw caps, and zinc pennies. This should get you the silver coins, copper pennies (wheaties), nickels, and larger gold jewelry that registers in the nickel range. Keep in mind that a lot of the new style tab tops will register in the nickel range. On the second pass use P2. On the third pass use P1. Then you can go into All Metal mode or Disc mode and without setting any discrimination go over the ground again to see if you want to dig any other signals.

Generally speaking, dig all repeatable signals. Another thing you can do, if you think there is too much trash that could be masking the good stuff, is go to the 4 inch coil. You won't get quite as much depth but it will separate signals better in trashy areas.

Anytime I get the opportunity to hunt someone's yard at an older home I always check the ground under where the clothesline is or was. Also where there were play areas and around climbing trees or fruit trees, gardens, picnic areas. In the days before central air conditioning people spent a lot of time outdoors especially kids.

Good luck with the new Time Ranger and Happy Hunting!

Thanks wasp and Bountyhunter1972
I figuerd there would be alot of trash, but what a better place to start at with a new metal detector. The suggestions offered will be used.I havent hunted in several years and then it was with a compass xp pro analog unit so this will be like starting all over. I will keep all posted on the outcome of my first hunt this weekend. Thanks Again to everyone for the suggestions and pointers

The best place to start with a new detector is, are you ready. I will wait until you are ready, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, ok then. the best place to start is the TOT LOT. With something like your time ranger you will have so much luck it wont be fun anymore. give it a try you will come home with more coins and stuff than anyplace else. I found a tot lot / small field and have found more there than any other place. I thought it would have been hunted out but no one has been there, I can't believe it. I am the only one hunting there. good for me i have pulled about 10 bucks out of there so far and i have only been there twice so far.
