New at Metal Detecting ? TOOLS & ADVICE

If you are just getting into metal detecting How you dig will make or break you and others-- MANDITORY TOOLS the Lesch knife. this tool is great at cutting plugs, and is made from 4130 Crome molydenum steel its worth the price , and you will need a pinponter_ I like the Garrett pro pointer this will save you from digging a wide hole, and shreding the grass to a mulch ALWAYS SAVE THE TRASH in fact i like to pik up trash like cans & bottles, because when the grounds keeper sees that he is going to like that and you will be his freind, before digging a plug just use the pinpoiter to see if its within the 1st 2" if your pinpointer is hitting it its shallow just make a slit and pop it out . If you have to dig a plug make it deep and straight so the roots survive dont dig grass at angles and shallow it will dye ..place the dirt in a bowl or on a rag and pack it back into the hole and the plug if the grounds keeper is going along mowing and hits a hole and gets a jolt up his back he is going to get angry with you , you should dig in such a way that when you leave they cant tell you have dug any holes and when they come to ask you what are you doing you show them your bucket of trash and you will be back , the three indispencible tools LESCH KNIFE ,, GARRETT PRO POINTER and a WILCOX 18" TROWEL the lesch is a great ground breaker but you will need the Wilcox to pry and dig dirt out of the hole , . if you are new keep in mind you will dig mountains of trash along with good things be patient -- any other input would be helpfull from anyone with experiance Gunnar also get a good magnet for quick pick up of nails, and getting out all the bits of a rusted crumpled cans this will speed up your digging - Iron masks good targets and somtimes its best to remove iron

You forgot the pack mule Gunnar......... Ha!, just bustin on ya.

Nice tools, but, too much for me to want to carry.....would be like work then.

for getting out in the woods, that mule would be nice.

Nice work! I'm trying to train my little stupid dog to be a "Trufflepig" only I want him to find gold and silver, dig it up and bring it to me. I know it is possible,
The wife really has a good nose for gold and silver, she's been digging it out of me for over 30 years! I dont think she'd be a good trufflepig though....talks too much...

A mule may be in order with all that equipment lol. Nice video gunnar. I keep a low profile by wrapping my lesche knife in my towel so it just looks like I am carrying a piece of clothing. When I find a target, I unroll the towel, place the towel on the side of the hole and then make my plug. When I find my item, I pick up the towel and pour the dirt back in the hole. As far as trash, I have a little belt-mounted bag that I toss my junk in. I want to hunt as light as possible.

I know it , it gets heavy , Good Idea jim on your Idea, as it would work great, Jim you are no bigginner searcher,

I wear a hard hat and a safety vest when doing parks, playgrounds, etc. People just assume that I belong there and don't bother me plus if there are trees, the hard hat saves your noggin. I also roll my drop cloth around the blade of my digger so as to not scare any Moms.

I like that wicox digger.I am getting a new lesche and wilcox for the parks.Great advise about stopping and picking up surface trash.Any trash on the ground i come up on,i pick it up.I like to leave the area in better shape than when i got there.Thanks. o_O

Well this is it, We are parisites, of the parks and we should be benificial to our host , kinda likethose birds that hang out on cows and eat all the bugs off them , the more benifit we are the better ,

My favorite and almost indispensable tool is a plastic ice cream scoop... Being plastic there is less of a chance of you scratching a potential target and you can pinpoint right through it. Also since I do most of my work during lunch time it's nice that your fingers don't get dirty poking them down in holes and then going back to work looking all grubby... Yes I am the guy in Poughkeepsie that metal detects wearing a button up shirt, khakis and patent leather shoes. HA!

If you got a big old Saint Benard, you can use him as the mule, and maybe as your digger to! :)-)
In fact I think we should see if we can train ALL dogs to dig for coins. Might be the beginning of a
new business.???:)-)
