My buddy and I have been hunting this community park in our area. It once had duplex housing that was probably build in mid 40's. We have found 7-10 Wheaties and four mercury dimes in two days, 1917, 1928, 1944, and 1945. They have all been along the edge of the park, a strip of open area about 150 feet long. We have found two on each side of what used to be a street, but is long gone as it looks now. I am finding all kinds of aluminum siding bits and pieces, old bits of copper tubing, and aluminum antenna tubing. I am sure that this place was dozed over some to flatten things out and bury the trash left when the houses were torn down.
I can figure that what we are finding was change dropped along an old street sidewalk. The thing that really has me puzzled is, why are we just finding silver Mercs? I would think we would be finding some more recent silver mixed in.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Jason

I couldn't begin to figure out why that is the case. Just enjoy the good finds and have fun !! :detecting:

Yeah McDave, I am enjoying. Just trying to understand what could have been in this area or happened in this area. You never know, it may lead to more great finds!

Just my thoughts .............

In the original duplex days ( Maybe after war housing) people didn't have a lot to drop..

All the pieces of assorted metal is from demolitions of homes. Maybe older coins mixed in and being masked by the trash. Bull dozers remove a lot of coins as an area is cleaned up and hauled away for trash.

As to the now losses... Or newer coins... people just do not use the parks like in older days... Also A BIGGIE if they do please notice.. Most kids activities BALL, Soccer, etc is like mini pros on the fields.
All have full uniforms, do not carry change in their pockets etc.. Times have changed. We have to adapt........ Check the fringe areas where parents and relatives sit.. Even that aspect has changed many do not carry cash only debit and or credit cards.. They also do not sit on the ground or blankets.. Lounge chairs is the present fashion LOL .....

Thanks for the input Elton, I agree with what you say completely. I just figure there would be a silver Roosevelt or something from the late 40's mixed in there. I have found a few clad dimes, but no silver other than the Mercs. I guess the more we detect there, the more we may figure out. Total time in this area for us is about 5-6 hours. We still have a lot of park to cover.

when i first started detecting i hunted 3 schools all built it 1957. i found a lot of silver dimes there and most of them were mercurys. i never checked how many were minted but always thought that there were just a lot more mercs in circulation than roseys.

Chances are there is silver there, it is probably being masked. Put on a small coil. That should help. Good luck! HH jim tn

....jbr13....what kind of objects are you finding away from this 150 foot stretch like in the middle of the park or 10 to 20 feet away from where the original street used to be ??...If you are finding nothing ...then evidently a lot of fill dirt must have been hauled in.....try a larger coil such as a 10 or 12 inch coil.....if you still are finding nothing then the coins and other goodies are just out of reach......some parks and other areas have 2 to 3 foot of fill added.....Good Luck...also in the 150 foot section after you hunt it good then go back with a smaller coil.....

Perhaps some insight would reveal itself if you where to research the 'March of Dimes" and in particular your towns involvement between 1938 - 58. There where fund raisers held everywhere several times a year.
