A dear friend of mine just gifted me a "Whites MXT pro" I read the book but I'm still a bit lost--Can anyone tell me the best way to get started? I have taken it out in the yard--found a bit of junk--but I thought some of you more experienced hunters could help me out. It's kind of over my head to start with . Thanks in advance.

Your friend is pretty awesome and he sent a great detector!!
I think these 4 videos are nice for learning the MXT/PRO, and they are produced by Whites!

Below are 5 videos also produced by Whites for the MXT. Still relevant but earlier videos.

If it were me starting out, go to playgrounds with wood chips and play with your settings. Open it with NO discrimination. Or throw some coins, metal objects out in your yard and start learning the machine and pinpointing,.etc. I know once you get using your machine, you'll LOVE it. HH, Nancy

You got it. The more you practice, the more you'll get use to your machine. It's a very easy machine to run and you're probably making it a lot harder on yourself than it really is. Relax and take it slow. You'll get the hang of it before you know it. :) HH, Nancy

hi
im really struggling with my mxt 300...the vdi jumps all over and hot rocks constantly coming up...
i am hunting in northern ny adirondack mountains on alot of ledge rock/mineralized rock...how should i adjust machine/gain///grounding
im frustrated
thanks in advance

Rocks have a lot of iron in them. So, you will get hot rocks the 300 coil isn't the right coil . To be searching in high mineral area you need a dd coil . The 300 coil is made for parks, fields, and open area with low mineral ground. Big coils for swing in open place's.

Before you go insane, you will need to buy an eclipse 5.3 coil.
This coil will be the back bone of your detector and you will be able to control all aspects of the learning curve.
Then once you get a handle on how it functions you can tailor your detector with other coils.

Start in the c&j mode with tones off. Set the discrimination and sensitivity at preset and start swinging. Don't worry about depth or the screen or what you are or are not finding. Learn to pin point and have fun. After a few hours of detecting, read the manual again.
Everything else will come in a natural progression.
Nancy was right. The Tots with wood chips is the best place in the world to learn a new detector. Get yourself a small plastic rake and you will be in business.

For working tot lots these two items are invaluable. A sturdy child's plastic sand rake and spaghetti spoon.

One of the best detectors out there. Personally I would ditch the 12" coil it came with to start and get a Eclipse 5.3 Its a great coil , not so big and makes the machine balance well. I would prob start in coin and Jewelry mode and use just a little discrimination. The MXT runs a mixed audio and if the noise gets a little overwhelming at first I would turn the threshold down just enough to make the machine run much quieter(kinda like the quiet search the ol classics and M6 use)until you get some hours under your belt and learn the machine.
