New (almost) CZ70

Hello All...I just traded a Minelab Quattro for a nearly mint CZ70...I got to use it for about 1 hour today on my field and for about 1/2 hour in the back yard. We're a military family stationed in England, and my main machine is an MXT with X5 as a backup. I actually started over here with a CZ20 and found my first hammered coin (Henry penny) with it and since I didn't like the Quattro, I'm taking the opportunity to get reacquainted with Fisher. I found coins in the yard and a few bits out in the field.Just a few questions if I may...

1. I had the sensitivity cranked up to max.. I noticed in a few threads that it was suggested to go 4 or 6 at most. I didn't notice abnormal amounts of falsing, but that's probably because I'm used to listening to the constant whining of my MXT....Should I go with a lower sensitivity? Any thoughts?

2. I'm using the 8" coil..It's a bit small on some of wide open fields. Will the 10.5 or 12 be less sensitive to smaller targets? On an air test, the 8" was picking up Edward farthings at about 6-8", so I'm confident with the 8" but would like some more coverage.

Hopefully, soon, I'll be posting some nice Roman and medieval finds pictures pulled up with the CZ70. Thanks in advance.

Of course don't have a prayer what you ground is like, but everyone I ever talked to couldn't get past four without their machine becoming erratic...Have used CZ's including the CZ70 since 92 and have gone as high as 6 or 8 with older units but never Max(10) and I think you are into overkill at Max..Especially when I feel the CZ70 has different sens. parameters and 4 is about tops in most cases while older CZ's can go a bit higher but 10 even with an older CZ would require excellent ground..
I realize even with a lower sens.you can expect excellent depth and a beep here and there when nothing is evident, however sens. set too high will cause these beeps to be almost constant.
I find the stock 8 inch coil to be adequate for depth and like the small five incher acc. coil for trashy areas and places a larger coil won't go. As far as the Fisher 10.5 its really heavy...gives very little depth increase but will really increase your coverage...
By all means put the Sens. back to 4 and you will excell. Many do well
with the 10.5 hipmounted and of course that is your call..

is non-mineralized. So, I imagine that's why you were able to run it so high. I can run my Coinstrike on 10 in England with no problem, because the mineralization is nothing like the US. NASA Tom said once that a CZ will hit max depth at around 5, so that's why I never had a problem going half way with CZ's here. If iron begins to become more sensitive to your maxed sensitivity settings, maybe try 6-8. I think that CZ should be a fine unit for UK fields, just don't pay any attention to the meter which is of course based on US trash & coinage. I would look at Sunray's 12.5 coil which really gives superior coverage in those huge fields. I chest mount the box like in this picture when I use bigger coils.
Congrats on the hammered. My first was a Henry penny too. You are very lucky to be stationed in some amazing detecting grounds. Please let us know when you start getting Romans & more hammered.....
Good luck,
Bill

Thanks for the tips. Took it out and really got serious for about 1 hour today. Found five coins ranging from late 18th century to 20th. Also found a big "grot" that could be Roman but I'm waiting to get it ID'd. Didn't find any hammies today, but I think it's just a matter of time.

CZ70 is definitely not as hot as my MXT even though it's one Khz higher freq, much more stable, but I had forgotten how deep Fishers go. One of the shillings was down at least a foot and still had a super strong signal. Once I pull a small sized hammy out with it, I'll have enough confidence to make this either my main machine, or definitely the primary backup. I'm glad I just ordered a longer shovel.

I've got class this weekend, but I'm gonna try to get out for about 3 hours on Sunday, so hopefully I'll be posting some goodies.

Thanks again....

You are in the treasure mecca! I am stationed in Germany and find alot here but the Roman activity was much longer there. I hope I can get a tour there one of these days.I spent two weeks there in June and had a great time hunting. The places I went were pretty much hunted out but I just hunted around the base. The pubs are great also. Good luck and happy hunting:usaf::fisher:

Definitely the mecca. Our finds advisor for the UK Detector Net is German and lives in Weisbaden, where he does pretty good on finding Roman coins/artefacts. He's the most knowledgeable guy I've ever heard for IDing Roman/Medieval finds. His name is Folkert. If you get a chance to check out UKDN you can PM him and get some info. We live on Lakenheath and I work on Mildenhall. If you ever come over TDY, please look me up and I'll take you to a few of my fields. We'll be here for another 5 or 6 years, so plenty of time....Good luck and HH

Here's a couple finds from my fields...Medieval buckles and Saxon brooch.

Good stuff! I have emailed back and forth with Folkert several times. He is gonna teach me the ropes when I can make it that way.I have found one Roman coin and he told me what he thinks it is. He seems to really know his stuff! I want to head to the UK from here but the wife wants to go back to the states.I am gonna check out the equals listing when it comes out and if England is on there I might have to slip it on there. I will let you know if I get over that way. Keep us posted on your finds.HH
