New advice from group

HI All,
This is Doug in Sacramento, CA......I'm an avid relic digger by way of my job which is in construction inspection. I often come across trash pits, privies, wells etc. during my work.....but I would like to take it further by getting a decent metal detector.....The problem I have is that there are so many different companies making them now and would like some advice for a decent detector(brand name and type would be helpful) for someone like me just getting into the hobby.

Thanks in advance for any input,

SacCityDoug

Lot of machines depending on user preferences/features, budget, and possible other uses. There are a few local shops and dealers in the Sac area that has new and used detectors, I'm running short on time (some work on Sundays), but I'll get back to this post later this evening or you can PM me. DirtRob Sacramento area too...

Good average depth, good trash separation, good discrimination, short learning curve, optional coils available and proven abilities = ACE 250!

I agree with the other post replies starting with the ACE 250. It's so inexpensive new, you get allot features (bang) for the bucks. Can't go wrong with the 250 - just be sure if using headphones which is recommended, get a set with adjustable volume as the 250 can be an ear bang experience. If working around heavy equipment, the over the ears type will help block external noise.
To make a long one short for now, read about detectors, you'll find loads of info. I see your already on this forum. Just don't get one of those off brand toys - go with one of the name brands. Also, think of the accessories such as any additional coils etc., and any other uses you might want to use the machine for. Looking at the ACE, it has various modes including relic, and its all simple to operate since there are not loads of menu's and sub menu's. It doesn't have a back light if this is a feature you need after the sun goes down.
There are a handful of machines/models - just apply one to your preferences for relic - good luck and ask them questions.
