New Ace 250 or used Cibola?

flyboy

New member
As a newbie, I was about to order an Ace 250 as an entry level machine but then I read all kinds of good things about Tesoros.

Does Tesoro actually repair machines that may be 5 years old and may have had several owners? If so, that sounds like the best warranty in the business!

The Ace 250 new is $200 shipped. A new Cibola is about $340. It would seem that perhaps a used Cibola with a "lifetime Warranty" would be a better quality product for all around use, excluding water detecting.

What would a good used Cibola be worth and is there a site where this machine could be found?

Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Fly

A lot has to do with your hunting and what you expect to do with a detector. Neither machine you mentioned is a do everything machine, but they are both capable, given their limits and your willingness to become expert with them. I own both (well a 250 and Vaquero - same practical difference) and I like any detector made in Prescott, AZ by the Gifford Clan. But, what I'm about to say may offend some, so if your sensitive, please dont read further.

Its true and it is a VERY big plus for Tesoro's. I have invoked the warrant twice and Tesoro made good as promised. I also did it with a used Garrett and there was no charge, even though I was not the original owner. I wouldnt hesitate to buy either detector, new or used, but Tesoro gets the nod, if you wanna base it on the warranty alone...

We're talking about value here. For the price difference and for the features and abilities embodied, the Ace is nearly untouchable. Is the Cib a good product? Yes. Absolutely. No one could be faulted for owning a Tesoro OF ANY MAKE. But, is it for a newb, for all "around use", as the term is generally employed? I'd say No.

The 250 will offer the features that are absent on the Cibola, features that often apply directly to WHERE and HOW a newb searches and while meeting the EXPECTATIONS that a newb brings to the game. Can the Cib be a general purpose unit? Of course, it's a detector - whose sole function is to detect the presence of metal.

But, would you as a new user find much to like in the Ace, perhaps more so than the Cib? Quite possible. Some astounding things are happening with the Ace and it has set the business on it's ear. I get impressed more with it each time I use it.

Yesterday I found a soda can with it at the limit of my trowels ability to dig - it was so deep I couldnt get any more leverage in the hole unles I got a shovel to widen it! I had to go down through the woodchips and the sand AND the first several inches of under-soil. Big Deal right? "A soda can... phooey! I'll bet the Cibola could do that...", you might say.

Well, I'd agree, except that I had the SENS at only half strength, AND I detected the can while I was whipping the coil, since I was speed hunting and the Ace allows for that sort of rapid hunting speed. Im not saying a Cibola wouldnt do it, too. But, I can tell you that the Ace surely can.

My very first detector was a Silver Sabre II, a fine little unit if ever there was one. In hindsight, I'd favor the Ace over it.

Keep on the Classifieds here and elsewhere, like over at the Treasure Depot. These things pop up all the time and it wouldnt hurt to make your wishes known publicly. You can get either detector used and will do well financially by doing so, but keep your wallet handy, they go FAST. Id say get em both and make the comparison yourself! I have, and Im keeping both...

I've got both. My 8 year old uses the Ace 250. It's a toy. The Cibola is a serious machine. No comparison on depth or discrimination. I'd buy the Cibola if I had to pay three times what the 250 costs. Even though Tesoro's warranties are non-transferrable, I've never seen a time when they wouldn't repair a second hand machine for free.

"I'd buy the Cibola if I had to pay three times what the 250 costs..."

"The Ace 250. It's a toy. The Cibola is a serious machine..."

"Cibola is a great machine. Southern Treasures has a used Cibola for sale..."

Zeb, talk about your hired bashers! I've used Tesoro for years, expect I will always have at least one and currently own three of them: A Vaquero, Golden and Tiger Shark. Each has its own attributes. None of them are perfect.

But good is good and what works, well, works. I own an Ace 250, too. And it works. Quite well. At a value price. So do my other Garrett machines.

To say that only this or only that is good, and the rest are worthless is folly and only expresses slavish devotion. There is room for all, and denying others the right to try something different based on personal bias is, well, downright un-American.

Allow me to share a few comments from Mr. Charles Garrett:
"(sic)...Because a quality metal detector is really a scientific instrument, you can't expect it to be inexpensive. In fact, buying a cheap, off brand detector will shorten your career, because you won't find anything.
I make it a policy never to talk bad about the detectors made by other, reputable companies. And I also recommend that you don't need the most expensive model available, from my company or any other. Over the years my company has built a wide range of detectors. Yet our one continuing goal is to give the customer the most value for their money - regardles whether he buys one of our models or not.
We've even finally achieved my personal goal of a simple, capable, OneTouch computerized instrument that beats that $200 price (Ace 250)."
excerpted from the book, "Treasure Hunting for Fun and Profit", by Charles Garrett..

Seems we should all be as fair, don't you agree?

Tesoro does repair machines That have had several owners and usually a no charge....I bought a Garrett GTI 1500 a few months back....It was a used machine, I recieved extra coils with the machine. One of these coils was not working properly. I suspected it had a bad coil connector, I called garrett to see if they would sell me a replacement cable end. I explained what it was doing and i told them i had bought the machine and coils used....They told me to send the coil in and they would put a new connector on it for me....They also told me if it is bad they would send me a new one out the next day at no charge. I sent the coil in and it was bad....so like they said a brand new coil went out the next day...I had the coil back in my possesion in one week from the day i sent it in. Now I love Tesoro...and the Garrett service was a pleasant surprise...I had no idea They was this good. I wouldnt hesitate to Buy a ace 250. Its a great machine,as well as the cibalo. I guess the question you need to ask is do you want a beeper or a TID machine, and what kind of hunting do you plan on doing.

Here is what the Garrett Ace 250 has what the Cibola hasn't:

Display with these features:

Graphic Target ID Cursor (12 Segments)
Discrimination: Accept / Reject Notch
Electronic Pinpoint Tone and Visual
Battery Condition Indicator
Coin Depth Indicator
Push Button Controls
Tone ID, 3 levels
Touch-n-Go Operation
Modes Search Modes:
All Metal
Jewelry
Custom
Relics
Coins

Extra coils are really inexpensive: 4.5 sniper coil 60$, 9x12 coil 80$.

The Ace with the standard coil will cover more ground per sweep but the trade-off is that target separation in trash suffers.

The Cibola is deeper on low conductive targets and has the better (sharper)disc (manual control). It has better target separation if you compare both detectors with standard coils. Even a used one will cost more than a new Ace 250.

Now good luck with your choice,

HH,
Andy
