New 8x11 Coil-First Impressions

RLOH

Well-known member
I got a chance to swing a Vaquero with the new 8x11 coil and I have to say it is a very nice setup. I had to hunt a spot where the ground was not frozen or covered with snow so I detected a spot near Lake Erie. The Lake is still relatively warm so there was some unfrozen ground available to try this new coil out. This spot is not what I would call a "hot spot" so my expectations were not too great, but my very first find quickly changed that. Almost forgot. First and foremost, this coil is extremely light and there was no unbalanced feel to the "V" with the coil. Now, if the coil performed as well as it felt, I would be very satisfied. My first target was a zinc like signal that broke up where a zinc penny might. It was a clear, concise signal, but deep. I lifted the coil as I swept the target and it would only hit an inch above the ground. From 7 inches comes a 1903 Indian Head! What a start. I proceeded to hunt this hill and started find coins and small junk all over the place. The coil was sounding off on small jean rivets and other minute pieces at depths in the six inch range. For the record, I have hunted this hill very thoroughly over the years with just about every detector made so I was very impressed to even find small brass junk. For those who think the Tesoro Hot detectors lack depth, one of my signals blasted that theory out of the water. What I thought was a 5-6 inch signal turned out to be a two wheat penny spill from an honest 9 inches. This was not a weak signal and I was shocked. Now, I knew this setup would go deep, but a couple of minutes later, what I found confirmed how the coil would do with iron trash nearby. I got a one way signal that was very strong, but I figured it should repeat from other angles. I had the disc set to between iron and nickel. This one way signal disappeared at just past nickel. If this had happened with a ID detector, I probably would have passed, but with this great sounding "beep" I dug it. It was a no date Buffalo nickel with a two inch long rusty nail touching it. Impressed to say the least. This coil makes an already good detector even better. It should provide like results on the other Tesoro detectors.
