New 10 inch DD coil....

Joel-Winnipeg

New member
Today I exchanged my new unused Super 12 for a 10 inch DD coil and installed it on the MXT .
I never got out to test it as It was raining . Maybe tomorrow !
I was doing well with the stock 9.5 that came with the machine.:detecting:
The gurus that are presently using the 10 DD, what can I expect from this new combination ?

The first thing is the 10 DD will give you more coverage with each sweep. This will be even more so on the deeper targets because of the shape of the field on the DD versus the conical shape of the 9.5 coil. I think the 10 DD also has better side to side separation on targets

You should see more depth just because it's a bigger coil. Depending on your soil you might see even more depth. In my moderately mineralized soil it runs quieter and I see at least 1.5 more inches in depth over the 9.5 and about 2.5 inches more than the 6x10.

Since it is a spider type coil there is the problem of more snagging on stubble and really tall grass.

The 10 DD is now my general hunting coil. Rob

i agree with rcasio44, plus it will pick small items up,Mines run pretty quite here and it is just a great coil i never really cared for the stock coil though i gave it a good try.The gnd on mxt for ground here is 60s to 89 so i do pick up some great depth with it.

I also agree with Rob, and you will like the 10" over the 12". You didn't say is it the 10 D2 or the 10 EXcelerator, ether way you can't go wrong. And as far as the snagging you can buy a piece of plastic from a hobby shop and fix it to the bottom if the coil cover or just use zip-ties the fix it to coil, makes a solid bottom.......:thumb up:

Thanking all for the tips and info on the 10 DD coil.
Hillbilly Bob the coil is the White's DD coil that I exchanged it for the unused 12 that came with the MXT package.
The info that was presented in past post by many of you was the factor in buying this 10 DD
Many Thanks....

After the first few years of metal detecting popularity, many could be heard asking for more depth. Most realized that all they had to do was get an optional larger search coil. From the early '70s to the early '80s, several manufactures offered models with two or three search coils. A "standard" search coil was usually in the 6" to 7" size range, and a larger coil ran from 10" to 16", depending upon the size and type of target you were after. Most often, coils have been concentric designs. Perhaps the most popular larger coil for savvy, avid coin and small artifact hunters was something in the 10"-10

Thank you MONTE for the insight on the different coils.

I do most of my detecting in Parks, soccer fields ,school yards and baseball fields for dry land.
We occasionally do old yards and old school yards. Not much for relics in this part of the country as the first settlers came in the mid 1800's
Our detecting season starts early May to end of October so 6 months of snow and frozen ground.
The reason I decided to go to the 10 DD verses the 12 inch was the negativity expressed by forum members on the Super 12.
As I'm not seeking to deep of targets and mostly coins and jewelry in up to the 6-7 in. deep range I thought the praised heaped on the 10DD would be more to my use. I also am not keen on digging up big plugs in soccer and baseball fields. As it is now I'm careful to leave the dug up site like no one was ever there plus better than before.
I started this May with the stock coil and found three silver coins 1 silver ring,1 school ring (gold ?) and a 10k gold plus plenty of clad coins this is what I meant by doing well
These were found in soccer fields by grid ding entire field. Unfortunately most of the subsoil of these fields were brought and dumped and covered with good soil and grass.
There's plenty of junk (auto parts etc.) so can be a dilemma to detect.
Lots of nulling and overloads on the MXT.even using the factory settings.
Some people would suggest using the smaller coils in these environments but I'd rather cover lots of area and take my chances on more good targets.
I don't have a small coil at the moment but would likely buy and use the one that you suggested.
I will post some of these finds eventually and let the members of the forum know the differences between the 950and the 10DD.
I know what the 950 is capable of with the short time that I've used it so I will need some time out in the field with the10DD before I can judge what Its
good points are..
Thank you Monte for your interest and response that is what makes this hobby move to higher levels with the knowledge and sharing that you contribute.

I have the 10X12 SEF on a rod for my MXT, as well as the 12", but I also have sites where I can pout the 12" to good use. For the types of hunting you describer, I agree, it 's not the best selection.

The stock 9050 is OK, and I can see why you want to try the 10" DD. It, too, is a good coil. For most of my hunting, however, I've found the 5.3 Eclipse (6
