Very sad indeed. And I used to play with WW2 stuff in Okinawa underwater thinking that it was waterlogged.

I am also stunned. My only cannonball is a solid shot one. No fuse at all. I think I am glad of that now.

:surprised: thats rough i feel for his wife. poor lady..at least he lived his life doing what he loved. all you relics collectors PLEASE be careful...

hi all, my wife plainly heard the blast on that tuesday afternoon in february. we live about 5 or 6 miles away from mr. white's house. i was at work at the time. i didn't know sam white personally, but had met him. what an awful thing to happen to somebody. my condolences to the sam white family.

Almost every time I hear of an incident like this one, it's an 'expert' who is violating basic safety concepts.

My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Sam was as good as they come at restoring cannonballs. He had defused or removed the powder from probably over 200 shells. Guess we're never know what happen to cause this ball to explode. He was an avid collector. If you ever attended any Civil War shows in central Va you have seen him. He always set up at these shows. He will be missed.
