Never used a Sovereign but considering a GT, and have a question.

I bought a used Excalibur about a month ago and like it so much that I am thinking about a GT for relic hunting. On the GT, if used with the meter, in all metal mode, will the meter still indicate finds in that mode? I am thinking if it did, I could nil the sound and hunt by meter. Is there a depth advantage on the GT,in all metal, if I would hunt this way? Thanks.

The Meter will not ID in all metal mode that I know of as it only works in the disc mode.I never tired it myself as I don't feel the all metal mode will go as deep as the disc mode when i used it and didn't notice any meter reading as i was looking for depth. The GT makes a fine detector for coin hunting, but for relic hunting I feel the Advantage may be better for you.
What is great with the Sovereigns is it will ID with the tones and the meter used to tell the close tones. This will helps you to learn the tones as you can see what the tones sounds like with the digital numbers of the meter. The Sovereigns all hate iron in the disc mode so it will not see many of your small iron targets.

Thanks for the reply, Rick. I'm going to look for a club member or someone using the GT before I buy. I have an X5 for relic hunting, but I still favor some sort of ID and would prefer to have the ID in all metal mode.

I took the GT relic hunting, and I use it with no meter. I use the meter between my ears:yikes: But if I can make a suggestion to you, take your Excal relic hunting for a short hunt, to see if you think it's worth buying a Gt. My friend used his a few weeks ago on a farm. I don't have an Excal, I use a CZ-20 in the water. I also use a Nautilus and a tejon for relics if that tells you anything. I can bring it to the club mtg. for you to check it out. I don't really know why, but when there is water, or wet sand under the coil of the the GT, it's a different machine. Just my 2 pesos worth
