We had some people from our church over for lunch last week. We got talking about fireplaces and firewood, and he mentioned that he had about 3 truckloads of firewood I could have. Today, we went over there to pick up a load of firewood. I have to admit, the firewood wasn't much... there's 3 truckloads alright, but its in pretty bad shape; its been sitting in the open for at least 5 or 6 years, but we took a load anyway and will salvage what we can.
OK, enough of the firewood, it was their house that caught my eye. Not really the house, but the foundation. Although the house had new vinyl siding and windows, that stone foundation could not deny the age. How old is the house, I asked? He told me it goes back to the early 1700's. Come to find out, I found the house in a book I have, of old houses in Buckingham County. The book described it as a hewn-log structure, sitting upon a rock wall basement (see photograph). It was built by a (get this) British Naval officer who fought in the French and Indian War. Since his death, the house has been owned by 7 generations of descendants of the same man (I hope you understand I'm not going into great detail here). And the best part, the guy gave me permission to detect it, all 40 acres. God does bless those that attend church ~ hehehe!
There's stories of buried "treasure", as in heirlooms. Remember, this house was way out in Virginny, when Indians were the prominent race. The house also has a dirt floor basement... hmmm.
