I have always used White's and Garrett,,I just traded my SE Pro f7or a VX3,The only reason was I like the iding on the vx3 over the SE, But I want to start hunting beaches as well.we all know the SBS technology is awesome for beach hunting,I'm thinking about buying the CTX for this reason. Are should I just buy another detector maybe the excal,?..I will mainly be hunting salt water beaches,, is there any difference in the CTX iding than the SE.Hows the depth on the CTX?.

I wouldnt risk my CTX on the beach. Too many o-ring failures for my tolerance. The CTX stays home and the Excal gets exercise when Zi beach hunt. I miss the ID, but have gotten use the the language the Excal talks in to offset the screen. Great beach machine. Get both, if you can. Maybe trade the v3. :)

I love my CTX at the beach. Yes, there have been some leak issues. I would say most of them were probably from people who don't keep that o-ring and channel perfectly clean when replacing the battery. But I have heard from a few who are very familiar with the ocean and o-ring needs and they still had leaks. Just like any mass produced item, there are always a few that are just lemons. Even though I never had any leak issues, I still changed to thicker o-rings this year. It's cheap insurance.

I find that unless I am going in over knee deep at the beach, I always take my CTX and leave the Excal in the truck.

Never had a leak problem either, but like Jason says, I keep my seals clean and lubed. Also changed to the thicker Orings this year for the same reason I put a scratch protective film on my screen; take care of your tools and they will take care of you.

The real issue here is whether or not you are going to put the battery area under water. If you dont plan on getting neck deep, then the CTX is a great machine. If you plan on going underwater, scuba or something like that then the Excal. I have had my CTX in salt and fresh water and never a problem. I had an Excal and sold it as the ability to ID targets was so much easier.
