Needing advice on a Canon 20D lens

Greg (E.Tn)

Well-known member
I only have the stock lens that came w/ the camera, but I'm now in the market for an upgrade in lenses.

Can anyone recommend some good lenses for the Canon 20D, not necessarily limited to Canon manufactured lenses, but ones with high quality and image clarity?

I'm interested in a macro lens, a good all around lens, and perhaps a zoom.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

As Guv said, you can't go wrong with L glass, but you're almost always going to apy at least $1,000 dollars for it. Based on your post and knowing how you like to squeeze a penny, look at the Sigma 24-70mm in the link below. I've owned Sigmas before and have been very leased with them. The reason I stick to L glass is mainly for speed and ruggedness as they are used mainly for my sports photography business. Sigma is a bit slower and not built as well, but they are generally only 1/3 of the price of a Canon L lens. Since you don't require speed or ruggedness I think the Sigma is a great choice. The 24-70mm is a great walk around lens and it does do macro as well. I will probably be getting one in the next few weeks myself as I just sold my 17-40L to buy some indoor lenses for basketball season. Well, I am off to a day of football shoots, have a good one!

Start out with the 50mm F1.8 lens. You will be surprised at the quality and it's under $100.

Greg said he was interested in a macro lens, a good all around lens, and perhaps a zoom. The 50mm f/1.8 is none of those things. I agree the 50mm f/1.8 is a very good lens for the money but it doesn't fit any of his needs.

Once he sees the quality of its images it will become one of his favorite lenses. It's also a great low light lens and arguably the fastest Canon lens he'll ever own.

Sorry my reply didn't answer his question to a 'T'.

I didn't mean to sound like I was jumping on you, I just didn't want you confusing poor old Greg. As I mentioned above, I think the Canon 50mm f/1.8 is a very good lens, maybe even a great lens when you factor in it's price. You know, that might be a good thread to get started in here though. Have everyone post what their favorite lens is and tell why, and even include a price. I think I'll do that! Great idea John! :)
