Need your opinions on headphone choices for the Sov

It's been a couple years since I've had a Sov to swing and I was just wondering your preference for a good compatible headphone selection for my Sov. Right now I'm using some crappy Bounty Hunter (CalRad type) phones. I will be in the market for some new cans very soon. In the past I have used several in the Grey Ghost line, Timberwolfs, Killer Bs and Sunray Pro Golds etc. Just wondering what you guys like. I'm kinda leaning towards the Sunray ProGolds right now. Pricey but I like the idea of real leather soft earcup padding and headband. They seem like they would be super comfortable. I also like the idea of the booted toggle switches to keep the dirt out. Your thoughts? Also are there any excellent wireless options for the Sov available? Thanks for your input! HH, George

I actually used the Koss headphones that came with the Sovereign when I first
got it, and they worked OK, but did not have a volume control on them.
Later on after asking others for advice and opinions and on good headphones,
I ended up buying the Sunray pro golds with dual volume and sound limiter switch.
These are what I am using now and am happy with them.

I tried a pair of the Koss UR-30 that Minelab gives away with some detectors and was sadly disappointed in them. I gave them to my brother in law and he used them till they quit working.

I have been using Killer B II headphones with my Sov since I bought it. I keep a pair of Killer B Hornets in standby should my other pair fail.

I have not found any that I like better. I think the Sun Ray's and the Killer B's are made by the same people. At least warranty work is done by them.

Pro golds or black widows which have a higher noise rating. But....most using speakers are using audiosears...so it’s more how they are sealed and muffs.

George,

I have tried many different ones myself as my hearing is real bad and why I like my Sovereign with the the tone of the last target, so I use those different tones to know I went over a different target so I need the volume plus able to hear the different tones. In my case the Timberwolf were the ones I like to use with the Sovereign but they didnt have the volume for my Explorer when I had it. The Troy Pros worked on both detector and never seen such and nice cable as it was strong and coiled up nice. The Gray Ghost are good too, but not enough volume for me, but they were making one called the Bushmasters for a dealer that were very nice volume for me. The Gray Ghost has a set called the NDT (no down time) is a set made for those that can change the cable in the field anytime you want as most know the cables are the weak spot on any headphones, so you carry a extra cable with your detecting supplies so if you have a problem you wont ruin a whole day as you just plug in the new set of cable . The Sun-Ray Pro Gold have been a excellent set to and really wish they had the volume my Timberwolfs or Bushmaster do.
Many different ones out there made for detecting and I will only use those made for detecting as they are built to last longer than those made for listening to music.
As I said these are the better ones I have used and my opinion too.

Good Luck
Rick

I think I've decided to splurge on the Sunray Pro Golds this time around. Like Rick, I also preferred the thicker muff headphones in the past and the Black Widows I found to be about the best in that category but they just got too hot in the summer to wear and they are pretty heavy as well. This time around I want more comfort and a lighter set and I think the Sunrays will fit that bill nicely. :) HH George

George,

You will be very happy with the Sunray Pro Golds. They allowed me to hear those faint, deep signals.
I am sure you are aware but will mention to make sure you max out your volume on the machine then adjust to a comfortable level with the blast limiter switch in the ON position.
Good luck! - Jim

George, I use Detector pro Jolly Rogers most people don't like these because they are not loud enough. I run the volume all the way up and they are just right also these are the most comfortable headphones I ever used. MY suggestion stay away from the wireless headphones on the Sovereign tried one of the popular brands and deep targets were missed. At first I thought the wireless would work but after a few times out disappointed on the performance my conclusion wireless headphones are a cool gimmick but doesn't work for the Sovereign. Good Luck Ron

I was in communications in the Navy. If I had five dollars for every hour I wore headphones in my 20 years I would be one rich man. I find no problem with wearing good headphones. A little warm in the summer but then so is the weather. I found the Killer B II's to be to my liking. The Hornets that I have for a backup give good tones but the magnet in them is strong enough to cut off my hearing aids. I can still hear but the hearing aids are reading the electrical impulses and not the actual sound.

Those are the two I use. Black Widows at the ocean because they block out the surf and wind and the golds inland....both are great and reliable.

I'd say the one I use to make, but don't make them anymore.

Hello all,
Excuse me jumping into a thread on my first post, but best my one finger typing goes into something that maybe of interest ;)

Maybe another option I've used for 20 years plus now is old school stereo reducer jacks, it opens up a different set of options & mostly cheaper or sitting in your junk draws at home from the '80's stereo walk-man's etc.
My XS2a has never had a set of big head phones run on it, haven't owned any for ages, so I can't judge if there's any draw backs doing this it's up to others with more experience than I to decide.
Back in the day it saved me a heep on 9v's for the Groundhogs. Hope it maybe useful input, I've gained a lot from lurking here over the years so it's nice to be able now to maybe give something back.

Have fun........Paul

My Favorite headphones are the SunRay Pro Gold with gel pads.

I've used the gel pads before, they are extremely comfortable for sure! I plan on getting them for my ProGolds when the original leather muffs wear out. HH, George
