Need XT70 settings for an old mixed trashy site

I am assisting our local museum at a site with 320 years of Spanish and American WW2 history. They have found lots of gun parts from Springfields, Browning, Krag and probably even from a Lee Enfield. They have also dug up several live bombs which needed to be defused. Where they need help is finding all the small metal items.

Here is the situation...a few excavations have been made down four to six feet deep. I am detecting the dirt piles for them. Unfortunately, the site also has a lot of modern trash. I've done well the last few trips with the Vaquero w/ the 5inch coil - butt plates, trigger guard, etc. Last weekend, they were real happy to see a musketball I retrieved with my Vaquero - it is the only one to come out of the site and I'd like to go back with the XT70 tom.

Guys, I need help for XT70 settings. I'd like to knock out the iron nails and find everything else. I have the MF and HF standard size coils and a 5x10 HF coil..which coil to use and what detector settings to start with? auto or fixed GB? It must be obvious that my XT70's been in the closet too long!
Hope to hear from all the experts..My hunt starts TODAY 6pm EST ...that is 6am here in Manila. :detecting:

this last one is a museum find - wish I had found it!

Doug I think you should run in prospecting mode with iron mask set in the one to five range, in this mode and settings you won`t miss even the smallest artefacts.

Hi Doug {Manilal}

A few months ago i had a tesoro Vaquero with the 5 inch coil and for a small control box it was deadly on discrimination and depth the only thing i did not like was no variable tone value.

I had a large washer and big pair of pliers which i put over our $2 coin the coin is 3/4 inch round and it knocked out the pliers and washer and got the coin, incredible. Minelab range of detectors just cant do that.

Best of luck with your search.

Thanks Kris! Got rained out today from Typhoon Sepat despite the fact that it was on its way to Taiwan!
I did get an hour of detecting with the XT70 with the prospecting mode and found bits and pieces of small brass and copper. I liked the way it would reject iron nails and still beep on larger ferrous items.

Got rained out! Piles of dirt everywhere! There's a lot of broken red bricks.

An artillery shell found by museum personnel...scales are in centimeters.

Thanks Pinpointa. I like the Vaq for its simplicity but found the Bandido tones to be more solid. Pinpointing was not necessary with the smaller 4 inch coil.
I also own 3 minelabs and the Sov is my current silver magnet. Getting to like the XT70 but will probably sell the Quattro.
