Need to replace Excal coil?

Goldrings

New member
I have a Excal 1000 about 9 years old. The coil wire outer jacket is starting to come off down by the coil.I recently got a set of GG amphibians from OBN (He is the guy to go to for excal headphones)
Now my question is what is a good coil for beach hunting South FL? I do not go diving with it but would like it to be water proof. I understand there are some good choices out there. The WOT seems popular
and the SEF Butterfly from kelly co. Any help would be great. The deeper the better :)

If your coil is still good. You can PM OBN, he knows what replacement cable to use and where to get it. If you're good at fixing electronics that would be a cheap fix. There's a thread showing the cable, and I thought I saved it, but sorry, it got lost or deleted somehow. I live in West-Central FL, and my favorite coils for hunting at the beach are: (#1) The WOT (the deepest), (#2) The SEF 12x10 (deep and extremely stable), (#3) The 10" Tornado. For diving I would use the 10" Tornado as it is the easiest to move back and forth in the water. Good luck with your repair or modification.

I dont think its as easy a fix as that. If the damage is nead the cap .... ya its a simple fix....cut off some and put it back. BUT ifs its near the coil i have only seen Mel Parker fix one. You might call Kelleyco since you are hear in FL.... they will replace the coil with the standard 10". I personally dont like pushing around a huge coil in the water.... dry sand and wet i use the 13" ultimate because its lighter on the Sov. Those using the WOT.... normally have to turn it down and most LARGE coils loose depth on smaller jewerly. I think any of those coils mentioned would run you near $200 and you do the work.....or i think Kelleyco replaces the standard coil for $250ish.

Here is the thread where Mel Parker shows how he repaired one:

One thing about the 13 ultimate is the short cable that comes on it. Even on the sovereign it must make it difficult to hip mount? The WOT sounds like it might have some stability issues with the excal from some of the guys that use them. The SEF might be the way to go. Has anyone found a good water proof connector to use or is it best to hard wire it inside the housing? I saw OBN had posted a wiring diagram for the excal.

Thanks tvr. Yes my wires are like the ones in Mel Parkers post! He did a nice job on fixing that one. And that is my dilemma once I cut the cable to make the repair do I replace the coil with a new one or fix the old one?
Will probably fix the old one either way. Saw OBN had posted that he gets his wire from McMaster-Carr (#9204K12 continious flex wire) it is $3.37 a foot + shipping. Will probably go the Mel Parker root on the repair. But still might get a new coil just still not sure witch one to get!
