Need To Replace Battery in Garrett Sea Hunter 500 XL Pulse

Tfor2

New member
Does anyone here know of a replacement battery or does anyone have pictures of the repair process?

Thanks

You might want to give Garrett's a call. 1-800-527-4011 or 1-972-494-6151. They are very helpful.
I've had my XL500 VLF since dinosaurs roamed the earth. You can kinda see in there 'cause the case is clear and I've always assumed that it just used 3 regular 9V rechargeables. I send it in to Garrett's everey couple/few years for servicing and they factory seal it, so I'm not about to break the seal and open it up. Now, that pulse machine may very well use completly different batteries. Call 'em up. They'll be glad to assist ya. Real helpful folk.
Okay, I just checked XL500 pulse owner's manual and it says it takes 7 "sub-C" sized NiCad rechargeables. Here's a link to owner's manual.

Here's a link to the field test from Lost Treasure magazine online.

Good luck with that:biggrin: Happy Hunting!:)

Sub-C batteries are available from Radio Shack with tabs for coupling them together in series.

I have rebuilt the battery packs in both my XL 500 PI machines and the work just fine.

Great care must be used in re-sealing the case and in noticing how the battery packs are put together so you can reassemble them correctly.

Good luck Friend,

CJ

PS Follow the charging instructions as if the machine is new to create a good base for "battery memory" and completely discharge the pack once in a while to help it last longer. I would rather use the new type batteries, but first I want to wear these out and as I don't use these machines that often that may be a long time coming.

WOW! Thanks a lot.

I appreciate the work here and suggestions.

I'll call Garrett.

HOLY SMOKES!

I have been looking all over the net for something like this!

Totally awesome!

This will work for me because I'm not going to use it under water and don't need a seal.

I like how they're easy to remove for replacing in field.

My machine should be here by Friday so sometime next week I'll be back for more help as I get into it.

Thanks

Hey T,

If you use it anywhere near salt water there should be a seal in place!!

CJ

No, it won't be used anywhere near salt water. I live in Michigan.

I've been into this "hobby" since the 60's and the PI is for an experiment. I've been reading about PI for years and I think I've found a purpose for it even here.

My last PI was back in 1983 and was called the "Deep Scan." I wasn't impressed with it so I've used VLF machines ever since.

Thanks

Garrett said a new battery for the Sea Hunter XL 500 is $49.95 and the O ring is $2.75 plus shipping costs.

If I send the whole unit in it would be $40 labor plus the cost of any parts needed.

I did a little figuring.

If I order a new battery I'm looking at about $60 total cost shipped. But this would be the old style NiCd battery which is subject to "memory." However, I could use my Garrett recharger with this battery.

If I send the whole rig in for repairs the total including my postage cost plus return postage would be about $130-$140.

I'm not sure what the cost would be if I fix it myself.

I was thinking about using AA batteries in an 8 battery holder and using my present AA battery charger.

Again, I don't plan to use this machine under water.

What would you do?

Thanks

What would I do? Man, I would send it in to :garrett: Make sure it's done right&tight!
Best of luck to ya, whatever ya decide to do!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)
