Need to prepare for first time

THE DETECTIVE

New member
Ok.
I have a brand new MXT.
I just got my 5.3 from Whites today (holiday shopper dollars... Yeah!)
I have the Headphones.
I have extra batteries.
I have the excitement energy to walk and digg from dawn to dusk

I don't know what I am doing at all.
I don't know what to expect.
I need to buy some digging tools
I do have a bunch of good ideas for hunting spots.

Please help prepare me for that first time out. Remember the day you first went out? Your detector in hand and ready to dig up gold and silver until you couldn't carry any more? let me know what to expect guys. As well as some tipps.

Thanks,
Dan

What to expect?

1. To be frustrated for a while. Just don't give up before you learn your machine. I've had mine for a couple years and am still learning. The more I learn, the more I find. Strange.....

2. To dig LOTS of pulltabs, unless you want to discriminate out all the nickels and gold.

3. To dig about twice as much as you need to, unless you get a good pinpointer. These things are invaluable!! I have a Automax V2 from Kellyco, that I got off eBay for $30. I like it because it has a long thin probe that works great in deep holes. There are lots of good ones out there.

Good luck! The MXT is one great machine.

Read the manual several times and take it with you..Go to a local park where the average targets are shallow, in reallity a local beach might be better as you can easily dig every target to get the feeling of detecting, pinpointing and retrieving a target..I still remember my first trip with a cheap unit and I dug a penny and dime and 16 years later still learning..Warning highly addictive and no detox. centers that I know of. Whoops one more thing use the preset marks till you get on your feet and welcome to the hobby...

Hey Dan...congrats on a good machine. I've had mine since August. It's not my first one but it's my first GOOD one. Like the others say, dig, dig, dig so you can get better in tune with how different things read. Accessories are important, too. One thing I'm glad I got was a good vest. I found one in the fishing section at Walmart made for fly fishers. It's very light and has 20 pockets inside and out. Great for putting trash in some and keepers in others. It won't add any warmth in the winter but it won't be hot in the summer. Carry a kitchen trash bag to kneel on and put dirt you're digging on. Practice digging and filling back a hole. You want to leave holes on others property as you would want others to leave them on your property. Read, read, read the diary and manuals over and over. Practice....that's what it's all about.
