Can any tell me what this is,found it near a Civil war site?

It measures about 8 inches long and 5 and half inches wide

I believe it was supposed to have handles on all 4 corners like the one in the pic.I have no clue what this is or was used 4

Totally guessing, but could have been a window cover that allowed the occupant to fire at the attackers... I've seen some similar ones on early territorial cabins. Billy the Kid's childhood log cabin has them, though the windows are larger.

I believe it could be a slave tag perhaps.

Don't really think it is a slave tag,3 of the handles are broke off and they are supposed to go in the other 3 corners like the one in the pic.
