Need suggestions on coin detecting strategy for se

ultramax28

New member
new to the se and needing a better strategy for hunting coins in trashy areas. I have been hunting older home sites with a lot of iron and some aluminum in the ground. my strategy so far as been hunting in all metal with ferrous on over conductivity and listening for high pitch sound and looking at digital display to determin coin from aluminum. Anytime i have tried to block out iron or aluminum it seems like the nulling isn't allowing the other signals through. Any suggestions would be appreciated

I use an Ex but here is what I am doing and have had success with it in area similar. Smaller loop(coil). go slow and then slow down...reduce sensitivity..(keep trying different levels downward) bury a coin in this very area and experiment with controls. I am unable to stop the null completely in the spot I hunt like that but as I am sweeping slowly somtimes the tone latches onto the good target and I am able to find surprises. Here is the thing... I do ok with the slow swing pattern but in AM I have to really concentrate on fluctuations in sound then mess or test around different functions sometimes from AM to discrim...Ill Change the Iron reject level and Fast frunctions too to see which might work better (Fast for trash) Its not a for sure that the machine will not null out in this kind of spot just that sometimes it picks up on the good target at least enough to surprise me and make me try again. When I am tired of trying I go and hunt in the easy spots for a mind break as the machine loves deep silver...just its too far between finds. you probably already know all that but good luck to you anyway.

In areas like that its just as easy to use auto sensitivity ive not noticed any coins in manual that wouldnt hit in auto in those areas. I use an expanded nails reject that works great because i still seem to get a threshold. Sometimes it better to leave fast and deep OFF when in trashy areas just because you get a better tone on the targets.... you do have to slow down or you might miss a target with fast off. But then if you arent getting a good tone from fast whats the difference? I dont have the problem hunting in cond this way as i might using AM. Cond does give you a better seperating of tones on the high end.... ie you can tell a dime from a pennie. Where as Ferr you get a better hit on a nickel or jewerly than a pull tab. Whats aluminum hitting for you?... 7-27? The only thing you might get is a half reale or a penny sometimes.... so just use the LEARN and disc it out. If i have hunted a park before that i know has produced but im getting too many tones in AM.. then i switch and use an OLD COIN pattern that surprisely works very well. Even if it nulls ive found you still get a chirp or good tone from coins.

:nopity:ive recently started using a sepro ,but compared to my laser it sings like a canary. this is in factory set up.
do i keep it in this mode for some time, or try to use other settings? any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers..

a couple of things come to mine... i dont know how trashy your area is, the EMI, or that you arent used to the SE. You shouldnt be getting a lot of noise in factory setting. Have you tried RESETTING the machine? Cleaned under the coil cover? OR... beleave it or not the batteries. Once they start getting below a certain level, for mine half way, on the slimpack it starts generating more false noise. Are you missing deeper targets in factory setting... yes. However in some areas like trashy areas ive done just as well in factory because of the reduced sensitivity and limited depth you get in those locations.

I am with utahshovelhead about going slow.... I have slowed down a bit and even with the nulling, I pick up the targets now. If I get a small blip of a possible, I switch to AM.

One other thing I may suggest...depending on which detector you were using before, the EX makes a lot more noise overall and I dont mean just the null on iron..it took me the big learning curve to get thru my head that a nice easy threshold is not always going to work with the EX. (canary is about right) But the sounds are KEY to this machine. Set down some good coins every time you start a hunt when you are new and go over them. dont even try to find a clean place...just put em out there and start listiening to how your SE hits on them. the other day I came to spot where I could see at least 5 holes dug by sombodey...running my coil around them just for fun produced not a hit but a rise in the sound. FROM EVERY DIRECTION as I circled it it was the same rise in sound and the cursor was moving around the nickle area but not what I would call a steady target. But the sound was nice. I like the nice sound. It never got high pitched untill I was out and in the pile. I dug a 50s rosevelt right out of the middle of someones holes. How? SOUND. What Im saying is even durring the Null pay attention to the sounds you know are good and if you can... dig a little and check again. Its easy for me to dig in this particular spot so I dig down a bit and check iffy signals but if you are in a park or nice lawn dig only sure things till you get it down. Good luck.

Turn fast on, and deep off. Turn your gain to 7. Use a smaller coil or the new 11 pro coil. Sun Ray 8 is a good medium trash coil. Go slower and than go slower some more. The way you're hunting in all metal with ferrous tones is the best way in iron trash. As the moisture content in the ground changes you will notice that you will either get better or worse separation between nearby targets, depending on your soil. If you are new to the se, you should probably leave the machine in semi auto sensitivity, it does a fairly good job and still gets good depth while remaining stable. A SMALLER coil is going to be your biggest help, if you are hunting in thick trash it is pretty much a necessity.

First thing is get the pro coil ,if you do not have....I swing not to slow...but at the sound of any good signal....I stop and slow down...then pinpoint it....get close then ...turn off pinpoint..and wiggle the pro coil, around the target ...and if it is a good target...you will hear and (I use the numbers) see a good number( in the mess of numbers) as you wiggle the pro coil around the target.....DIG!!!

If you are hunting with a pattern go to 'Select' on the menu and ACCEPT foil and pull-tabs. After you dig a few at your dig site, disc OUT the specific trash with the 'learn' function AT THAT SITE. Reject the specific trash with the small cursor. If you disc out (reject) ALL foil and tabs, you will automatically reject most rings and jewelry AND nickles.....and fat indians and flying eagle cents....I think. It is pretty much the same if you are hunting with an open (no disc) screen. Make sure you only reject the specific trash you find at that site. Then sweep low and slow with FAST and DEEP off, ferrous sounds. Work slowly around any nulls or iron grunts to make sure you don't have a good, high toned, target masked.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I switched to a 6" coil and started swinging slooooooow and finally paid off. You would not believe the trash in the ground. I bet there was iron, aluminum, or something in between in every square inch of the place but when you hit silver you know it by sound. The aluminum all rings out high and you kinda get numb to it but the silver is different and you notice it immediatley. If i had my camera up and running you would see my shiny new 1904 barber dime. I know it aint much but considering the trash i was proud of it. thanks again for all the help. also side note my buddy has the explorer 2 and i can't tell a difference in the two as far as performance. Only difference is se battery holds up longer or maybe he has an old battery. Did i overkill with the se as the explorer is good enough?
