I picked up a 30 acre partial of land about 7 miles the way the crow flies from the spot that Lee surrendered. From what I can tell it has never been detected. I found this structure in the middle of it sitting on a ridge. It looks like a fireplace or chimney or some sort to me but a friend brought up the fact that there's no mortise or mud or anything holding the rocks together. What do y'all think? Also, what would be the best way to hunt the area especially around the rocks? Any special techniques I should use? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.........
Send me your address and I'll come help you hunt it. Oooops! I mean I will come down and give you some tips!
That looks like one of those old places that could provide years of detecting pleasure. I'd like to be able to tell you just where to look and what to look for. But every site is different. My first advice is to check the base of that chimney for a loose stone. One that might be hiding a cache! My best advice for detecting such a site is to work the entire area from every direction imaginable. Pay special attention to the areas between the house and any out buildings. You should "recognize" the outbuildings by scatterings of iron and/or glass. Look for what may have been the main pathway to the buildings (from the road) and work it hard. If there is a creek nearby, work the area that might represent the shortest route between the creek and the house. You might not be able to keep your coil close to the ground, due to the rocks. So run your sensitivity as high as you can, when you have to keep the coil off the ground. It is also tough to keep your GB constant, when the coil is changing elevations. So I'd GB in a clear spot and lock that number in. Check it every so often to make sure you aren't in an area with cinders or hot rocks. Look around for plants that might seem out of place. Those can represent garden areas. The whole family would work the garden, making it a good place to lose whatever may have been hiding in pa's overalls or ma's apron pocket. Most importantly, be patient. You may hunt for hours or even days before retrieving your first good find. But be persistant. They are hiding there somewhere. Keep us posted on how it works out. HH Randy
That looks like some sort of cairn or monument.
Does it have a fireplace opening?
Do the top rocks show signs of soot? Or any rocks for that matter?
Is it an actual chimney?
If it isn't, are there any treasure legends that would coincide to the area.
I'd hunt close in the structure, then start moving the loose rocks to hunted ground so I could get closer to the structure.
If the structure was like a camp chimney, I'd look for signs of the "chow hall" where a soldier could sit down to eat (?).
Take your time and dig it all. Probably a lot of target masking going on in that site. Should be a ton of ferrous targets hiding the good stuff. Frustrating but worth it.
what makes you think it has never been hunted? Just curious. But even if it has been hunted, no one gets it all, patience on your part will reward you with some goodies I am sure
thats an old chimney, the chinking has washed out. if you look 20' or so from that you may see a big pile of rock where the chimney on that end of the house fell down. i live in buckingham co. not far from you.
