every place i've hunted for coins has been super trashy. i stopped at the state fairgrounds in jackson yesterday for a bit and searched along the walkways into the fairground. my 1500 sounded like a pinball machine, BONK!!, GROAN!! PING!!, constantly. now, i was running in the factory ''coin'' mode, and i guess i was picking up everything that has been there for years, some deep. i got to thinking, maybe i should try to cut the sensitivity [ factory 75% ] and maybe the threshold back somewhat to try to quiet the chatter down somewhat. what do some of yall say????? i am not trying to get a 12'' coin, but it should easily get the ones 3''-5'', and i'm getting WAY too many signals as it is. advice, please,, pros and cons?????

Smaller search coil, slow your sweep speed down and listen for good target between the trash, bring your sensitivity down as needed and work the areas slow and methodical. Trashy areas suck and just take time to work.

In this situation, Bill Revis always advised to raise the coil a few inches off the ground...this narrows the search cone, and you still get plenty of depth. I always run the GTI at 75%...I find it unstable at higher settings. Good luck!

If you want to hunt in that much trash you will have to match your coil size and swing speed so that you are hearing only one target at a time. That often means swinging a very small coil at a snails pace to separate the trash from treasures. You will also need the patients of a saint but on the positive side, you will not have to move very far before your pouch is full.

a sniper coil might be the ticket. i bought one from ''backwoods detectors'' for the GOLD, or my grandson's PRO. i have also ordered a 6''x9'' concentric from Ebay to go on the PRO, as someone suggested that would work better than the 11'' DD coinshooting trashy parks. . of course, i can try it on the GOLD. it won't hurt much to have extra coils to go with two different detectors. being the proud owner of a 1500, a PRO, and a [ pre ordered ] GOLD,, i 'spect i won't be buying many more anytime soon, so extra coils could fit. now let's see,, go pay $100 for a sniper coil,, to find a handful of change???? sounds like a plan to me.......

o.k. guys,, i took your advice, and just ordered a 4'' scorcher coil from ebay. anything to cut down on some of the ''noise'' and aggravation. maybe i can find enough coins in the next few years,, to pay for it.....

well slingshot,, that is encouraging. i figured after i ordered the ''scorcher'' that it won't work with the imaging however. i guess i reckon i can learn to adapt. it seems to me that ALL the places i go, are picked like a chicken. i need to go out and find 20-30-40- coins in one day, as if i hit a dollar in pennies and clad, i feel lucky. the good news is. i am known to be tenacious, and i ain't giving up at this point. i live in [ or rather outside of ] a small rural town 40 miles south of jackson, ms, and it appears to me that MDing is not exactly an original idea around here. what i am getting, is other folks leavings, as the coins i find have been in the ground for awhile, missed by other goobers. i reckon the good news is,, this is wonderful practice. i went by a sports complex on my way home this afternoon, found ONE penny, that was there for awhile. that place was super trashy also, and pushed me over the edge to get the 4.5'' coil for the 1500.i guess it is like i always said, '' when you are at the bottom, you can only go up''. am i discouraged,, no,, not a particle!!!!!

Being a horse of few words all I will say to you is this.....Blackie AT Pro and I could go through your trashy area like Sherman's march to the sea:thumbup: We'd have your trashy area hawg tied, and raped of coins and headed towards the next carnie's convention in no time flat!

BONK!!, GROAN!! PING!!, in AT talk translates to nickel, penny, :inlove:QUARTER:inlove:

You might as well bite the bullet:nopity: and learn the vernacular of the AT Pro 'cause I suspect the AT Gold speaks the same forked tongue......

JUST DO IT!! Put on the smallest coil ya got on the AT Pro, go slow, and dig all the 52's, 75's, 80& 81's and 85-86-87's to get your 20-30-40 clad coins......dig everthing else for those little "life surprises".

i went back to the sports complex for a while this A.M., the ole 1500 sounded like a tape recording of a pinball gallery full of drunk teen-agers. i did manage to find 1 quarter, 2 dimes, and 2 pennies for my trouble. i got to thinking of the trip i made to arkansas on my motorcycle, with loud pipes on it. as soon as i got back from there, i pulled the Cobras, and installed factory QUIET pipes on the bike. maybe a 4.5'' scorcher will tone the 1500 down a bit... we'll see....as far as the GOLD, i will switch to it mostly, when i get it. at least i have the option of a sniper coil, and a 6''x9'' concentric to try.

FWIW- I often drop the sensitivity to 2 bars on my Ace in these trash havens and have amazing success. I also use my imagination, knowing the Garretts are MICROPROCESSOR controlled, I use a slower sweep speed to allow the detector TIME to process. Critics cannot stand this slower pace and lose the benefits of these detectors. Thus, the reason for different likes and dislikes for different people.

Just today I found a quarter on top of a nickel and the Ace gave both tones almost simultaneously- but it was a toss up which tone dominated at a faster pace.

Every place you hunt for coins will be trashy. That`s how it is. People drop more trash than good stuff. You have been given some good advice. These guys know what they are doing. I have had a detector for 10 years without much success. Then I found this site, and have practiced what I learned here. Every time I go out now, my finds improve. My best find so far, a small 14kt ring, in a very trashy area. The smaller coil should help, but it will still pick up the trash. You have a very good detector, you just have to slow down and really listen to your machine. I found it helpful to set up a test area in your back yard. Lay down a piece of cardboard and place some good stuff (coins, rings, etc...) and some trash (pull tabs, foil, nails, etc...) on it. Then sweep it with your detector and see what sounds and ID`s you get. Experiment, change discrimination settings and see how it effects your targets, both good and trash. You will find that some trash sounds just like good stuff, and you will have to dig some trash or risk missing something good. Good luck!

i've finally found what i needed most,, an area that hasn't been gone over dozens of times in the last few years. it is in an area of the state fairgrounds, and i have found approx. 40 coins in just a small part of it, kinda off where the midway is. i got to thinking about it the other day, as the state fair starts in a week or so. back in 1958 i was 14 yo, and they put up a BIG tent in this area, and had a late night burlesque show in it, around midnight. 'course, being too young for admission,, i did what any 14yo would do, i slipped under the side of the tent, and was rewarded for it by seeing my very first TOTALLY NEKKID lady!!! i got to thinking about the sawdust they put over that grassy area, and the folding chairs. [ and the lady, too ] i thought it might be worth a try the other day, but all the coins i found were only one to two inches deep. there HAS to be some deeper silver there, as the tent was in the same place each year until about ' 66 or so, best i recall. i'm going back friday, taking my grandson and his PRO, and just see if we can hit a few silvers. at least i have finally found a somewhat productive area. ----------there HAS GOT TO BE some silver there....
