Need some input from Willy, Royal, Fred, Mike, Cuppa, Ray, Rob, RonJ, George, OJ, and heck everybody! I'm building a chicken house and............

Wayne in BC

New member
wondering first where to put the bathroom. Some say under the perch but the poor birds would smell it all night. Maybe a conveyor belt to the garden?
Gonna build a chicken door in one side that opens in and one way only, goes into a cage so the chickens can enjoy watching me execute the Coons;)

I'm thinking Willy would know what color they prefer the walls, them being girls and all. Also Rob who is surrounded with females too.
Royal would know where to put the Chandelier and how to hook it up plus what they prefer to drink i reckon and Mike would be just the one to ask about mixed race chickens and their entitlements, some from Quebec may need special status regarding free food from the rest, first peck etc.
I bet Cuppa would help with their education and RJ also as i am sure they have educated a few chicks in their time as well as more gently than the rest of this crowd;)

I am sure Fred would be able to tell me what happens when a horse steps on one as well as input regarding controlling their female ways and deference to the Rooster.
George would know what heating system i should put in and Bayrat i'm sure can help with their social needs and frequency of showers. RodP, who seems to be a bit of a camera voyeur could advise about where to put the window?

I am also counting on General Ray for recipes and "plucking" for sure! If i have forgotten anyone i am sorry but this job has me kind of distracted..........

........ i hope everyone will contribute:biggrin:

Ray is a chicken plucker for sure but he might not be able to remember for sure because he swears he was drunk every time:thumbup:

I'd have to clear it with Clem....I mean, Rob but I think a nice "crap" brown would suit.

Our firm believes the important thing to keep in mind here is how do the chickens
feel at the end of the day? We must adhere to the principles of Feng Shui in this regard.
Chickens are by-in-large sensitive creatures and prone to illogical and irrational acts when
stressed (by environment). We have all heard of one such reaction known as the
"crossing the road" paradigm. "Why did the chicken cross the road?"....I'll tell you why
Wayne, the poor bird was confused by inadequately designed living quarters. Surely
chickens would not cross roads if the habitat supplied them was adequate in both function
and colour.

I believe Homer said it best, when trying to simplify for the masses, the proper way to
interact with our much maligned and misunderstood feathered friends.
And I quote: "Oh...I'm...not a chicken plucker, I'm a chicken plucker's son and I'm
sittin' plucken chickens 'till the chicken plucker comes".

Oh. Some nice looking fellows in white coats are at the front door. I must go see what
they want......maybe a warm cup of tea and some cookies.
Nice chatting with you, Wayne.

1.
Step 1

GET THE OVEN READY -- Put your oven rack on the lowest shelf. Turn your oven on to the BROIL setting (both knobs should be on broil). Shut the door and let it preheat while you get the chicken ready.
2.
Step 2

GET YOUR CHICKEN READY -- Wash your chicken pieces and pat dry with paper towels. Place chicken skin side down on a cookie sheet lined with foil (easy clean up!). For less calories remove the skin. Season chicken if you want with salt, pepper, lemon pepper, garlic salt, or whatever seasoning you want.
3.
Step 3

BROIL YOUR CHICKEN -- Place the cookie sheet with the chicken pieces in the oven and close the door. For legs and thighs: broil for 15 minutes then turn, add more seasoning if desired, and broil for an additional 15 to 20 minutes depending on the size of the pieces. For breasts: broil for 20 minutes then turn, add more seasoning if desired, and broil for an additional 20 to 25 minutes depending on the size of the breasts.

Hmm, maybe you mean if they need heat..............

Chickens are pretty tough. We just keep the water warm and sometimes a light bulb under the floor of the coup if its way below zero. LOL, I insulated it one year with styrofoam.... They pecked all of it off.

I like chickens...Was on a pickled egg kick for along time....Hot ones in big gallon jars........Once ready we would dig the yoke out and fill the void with home made horseradish...........Darn, now I'm hungry........

a couple friends said that no real "country" Chicken should have to live in there......but i am gonna paint it anyway cause it was used 3/4" T+G Cedar from an old fence and the paint is poor.
Sorry bout the lousy pic, our Son messed with the camera and had it on macro:rolleyes: That is my grandson Lucas "helping" yesterday.
I finished today and painted, will try to take a proper pic soon.
Maybe i can find some liberal Chickens that want to put on airs and can get me some gov't grants for feed?

Thanks for all your help on design but you knew i would do what i wanted anyway:biggrin:

Us smart folks recognize a building like that anytime. Carol has outwitted you again by having you build your own "doghouse". .......sorta like the mafia making you dig your own grave. Never mind asking us what color the chickens want. Paint it one of your own favorite colors cause' I'm guessing you'll be spending a fair amount of time inside that "chicken coupe". You might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but you do some pretty nice work .........

Have you heard from the building inspector, the tax man or the insurance people yet???

My insurance company sent a snoop around and he took pictures of the pails at the rear of my driveway (I am a plumber after all!!), some (not much) junk I had in the back yard and the mildew that was starting to need attention on the north side of the house!!

A man's home is "HIS" castle??:hot:

Each of these things needed doing of course, but it riles me to have anyone tell me so and that if I don't they will fool around with my insurance!!!!!!!!!!!!

So much for the "Land of the Free" and "property rights"!!:hot:

We were waiting for warm weather to have the house washed and had it scheduled before these clowns got pushy!

Watch out Wayne,:yikes:

and when they do they are very polite and respectful. Odd how a community of "allegedly" armed rednecks could inspire such behavior ;)
Actually there are no building restrictions either, we are in an agricultural zone and have a few acres. My property was originally zoned rural residential and subdividable. The local district arbitrarily changed my (and others) zoning to agricultural 6 years back and pretty much destroyed my retirement money by taking away the subdivision potential, that was the reason i bought it 20 odd years back in the first place! The sad joke is that it would be impossible to survive here by farming due to it being near useless land of mostly swamp and gravel. :veryangry:
They know that there are very angry people out here and do not push their luck, there have been a few incidents and threats directed towards some of them and rightly so as their agenda was driven by the votes of nearby city/town left wingers that want to control all our lives and know less than zero about agriculture.
