Since I've got the detector I have went on four different hunts. Total of about seven hours. I have a few questions that some of you may be able to help me with. I have dug about 50 beaver tail style pull tabs that rang in at nickle and many of them even did the ghost flash to the foil side. No nickles, no rings, any advice on that one. I have noticed that the machine puts a lot of junk targets in the penny range. Many of them I could just raise the coil and tell if it was junk but too many sounded real good. After the second hunt I put brand new batteries and put the machine in all metal and adjusted the ground balance. It was off but not drastically. It did not seem to make a difference on how the targets were classified. The last thing that I noticed is that all metal and pinpoint seems very weak. Discrimination is notably deeper. I was thinking about having the mods done to it but if it still operates the same I don't know if it's a keeper for me. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Four hunts and seven hours still isn't all that much. You didn't mention the coil used or the type(s) of sites hunted, either.

Pull tabs (from the old ring-pull type to the modern rectangular pry-tab design) can fall in a wide range of conductivities. sadly, most of the modern rectangular types fall in the 5

I had mine modified and Mr. bill did a great job,now it is a little jumpy at times but even in dicrim mode if it is junk it will bounce around but if it is junk and a coin the coin will still bang through kind of fast and repetitive there is not a lot of info with idx beep dig i still like it with the all metal modes i took my mxt out to measure the depth with 6" bulls eye coil on idx and 10"dd ex coil on mxt the threshold will pick up and go over object according to mxt measurements down to 10 inches there will be no display on idx just threshold sound rise and fall checked a few they were junk but i know some could be coins discrim mode will go deep you dig a little more because don't have all the information the mxt gives, but after a while you start to realize what a coin sounds like or a good or round object sounds like it is a good detector i will always use mine with the modes it is not my main detector but it gos with me when i go.I like to use it because it is on a different frq than mxt so i like to go over areas to see if it will pick up items i missed. As for having modes done you have to think how much could you sell the machine for and how much modes cost with those two figure together would this money get you better machine or would spending the mode money make a good machine better it depends on your hunting and your bank account.Hope this help some.If you don't have the small coil you might go to eBay or someplace and buy a use small coil and retry the idx and see if this helps.Hope this helped a little .

Howdy Kurt
In the fifteen years that I have metal detected, I have probably dug up and thrown away a 55 gallon drum full of pultabs and other Junk! Hey, I'ts part of the fun, just for kicks put a piece of low tack masking tape over the meter, and use it as a beep and dig type detector. Just learn the basic sounds and subtle differences the beeps are. Try that for the next few outings with the IDx, and you will soon get a handle on what the detector is saying to you.Good luck............Hombre

I think I will use it for awhile before I get any mods. done. I attend a couple of competition hunts every year and the idx seems like it would do very well and the fact that it has freq. adjustment is a plus too.
