Can anyone tell me a little about these 2 coins? I got these 2 coins from a buddy that was drinking and playing cards last nite. I gave him $10 for both of them. One is a 1873 silver dollar Trade Dollar and the other one is a 1817 cc trade dollar. Am hoping I did ok. I would be Thankful for any help. Thanks Joe

Have them looked at. The one on the right is the right design for a trade dollar but the year is wrong. It looks like the second "1" has been modified. Too bad because 1877 CC is a rare date. The one on the left has a proper year but the design is not that of a trade dollar. It is either a counterfeit, a medal. or less likely a pattern piece. It would be worth researching.

Trade dollars in VG usually sell for over 100 bucks. The better the condition the more they are worth?

I would have given more than $10 for them. If they are silver, you are way ahead of the game. Let us know.

Chris

The one on the right, dated 1817 sure looks real to me. I still think it is an 1877 modified to look like 1817. Still, with photos it's hard to tell. Are they at least silver?

Chris

Well that would do it. I still think they're worth 10 bucks.

How much did you win playing cards?

Chris

I would suggest that you find a sight that can give you US coin values, or get them properly appraised; and whatever you do DON'T sell them for $10!!!! I have only ever come across one here in Australia. A chap from the club that I met for the first time, was detecting on some private ground that I was trying to organise permission to, had just recovered an 1878 silver trade dollar (I was just passing by). The proceeds from that sale as I understand it, paid for a GPX 4000 and an X-Terra 70! Like I said, I don't know if it may have bee a rare year or something, so don't get too excited yet, but make sure that you can get more than 1 professional opinion on it's real worth. Some coin dealers can be real sharks too.
Mick Evans.

I bought one of those in Chinatown (for $3)-- I took it to a coin dealer, and the only way he cpuld tell was to weight it. The coin weighed 1gram less. They do look real. Kinda neat to have.
