Need some HELP!!!

Myself and a group of guys have been hunting along an old road bed, looking for a Confederate Calvary camp. This camp has eluded everyone for years and years, we think we are getting close. My friend found this buckle and we can't find anything on it. It is stamped copper, same size as a US oval with no hooks or indication of any. Any Clues? Thanks for any help!!

Man Bill. That's a piece of art. As to which it is I don't really know. Comparing it to either a CS or US is a crap shot. Although the rim seems closer to a US.

It could be trench art. A soldier could have picked up a Union buckle, filed off the US, and engraved his own artwork in his down time. Too bad there's no date inscribed to link it to the Civil War period.
