I was out deetin' this morning, and I found a clump of coins. It looks like 4 coins stuck together, one came off and it looks looks like an indian head penny. There are two more indians stuck together with a larger coin between them. They are caked in black gunk and impossible to make out. I don't want to ruin them, but i'm dying to get them apart and see exactly what they are. Any advice would be great...

Hard to advise without seeing them. If they are already ruined you can't hurt them. That was my first thought. Hydrogen peroxide is what I use on old coppers. It does OK but it destroys any numismatice value a coin has. Not that being buried for 50 or 60 years does them any good either. Sounds like a cool find. I'd be interested to hear what the larger coin is.

I'd start by soaking them in soapy water for several days, if they are all pennies. Silver will get discolored during the soak.

Heard that putting them in olive oil for a period of time could help .

Is the dark gunk possibly tar? somthing like 'goo be gone' might work. but I don't know if this would be harmful to the coins or not. I am with Cwilk,I would like to know what the bigger coin is. good luck.

Well I think I'm going to try the olive oil. It's going to be a long cold winter, and I'll be going crazy to detect, so maybe I'll let them soak for a 5 or 6 months, then in the dead of winter I can revisit them and see what I've got!
The one penny that came off is 1890, and another that I can make out (still attached) is 1906. As for the other penny, and the larger coin (nickel size) we will have to wait and see. I'll keep you posted.

Well, I finally got all 4 coins apart. The 3 indian head pennies are 1888, 1890, and 1896. (At first I thought it was 1906, but it was actually 1896). The larger coin turned out to be a "V" nickel, the date is 189?. They were so badly corroded and unreadable, I decided to make an electrolysis device to clean them up. They are in really rough shape, but the electrolysis did help a bit. I took before and after pics...I'll post the pics when I can.

I was going to make the same suggestion as Bill did. I think you'll find the milder suggestions won't do much. Those coins are of little value (collector) anyway, and will hold more value to you than anyone else.

I'm guessing the larger coin will turn out to be a large cent.

Congrats on the old coins!:beers:Nice addition to the collection!:thumbup:Happy Hunting!:)

Here are some pics for yall. The coins aren't pretty, but it has been really fun finding them, and then finding out what they are!
