Need some help with this item

I dug a completely unrecognizeable blob of rust out of a Civil War fire pit about a year ago. Not knowing what the piece was, I put it in the 'junk' box with the intention of throwing it into the electrolysis or zinc/lye someday to see what it was. Well, I was putting some more unrecognizeable blobs in the box a few days ago and noticed the rust seemed pretty loose. I flaked the rust off, and now I have a very clean unrecognizeable iron item. It's about 15 3/4" long and 3/4" wide, with the flat portion being 9 1/4" long. Any ideas??? Also, any suggestions on what would be preserve this relic? HH-Sarge

First thing that comes to mind is half of a set dividers. I believe they are used for artillery and mapping. Maybe not.........Aaron

Hey there Aaron. I didn't think of that, maybe a possibility. Pretty hefty piece of iron, though. So far I've seemed to stump the relic community with this one.

Hi Steve! That's the closest thing I've seen so far. I'll check over that link and maybe I can find something close. Thanks for the help!

I took a close look at my relic and I can see some evidence that the round end had been threaded. I do believe that this is exactly what you've shown. I've had very few suggestions and there were certainly a lot of wagons around the encampment.
