Need some help with my V3 ...

Willee - Texas

Well-known member
I have a Spectra V3 with the stock coil.
Other than running the sensitivity to the limit what settings would get me Maxium depth?

I buried a square style pull tab 9" in my backyard three years ago and The V3 will not detect it.
I have tried all I know and it just wont do it.
The Tesoro LOBO ST I have detects that pull tab solid.
The Tesoro Golden uMax (stock coil) will detect it but it is not a solid hit like the LOBO ST.
If no other detector could detect that tab then I would think it was too deep in this type soil and give up trying.
I get the feeling it must be something I am not setting correctly on the detector.

I also have an E-Trac with a Sun Ray 12" coil and also the 10 x 12 SEF coil that can not detect that tab either.

Any ideas from you experienced V3 users?

Just saw your duplicate post on the ETrac forum and the ETrac can't find it either. We need more info to make suggestions....what program are you using, what is your ground like, what filter are you using what recovery speed, your swing speed..........??? Can you hear it in all metal? Can you hear it in air testing? You have to help us out with a little with information Williee. I don't know why you would want to find a 9 inch deep pull tab, it seems most of us would want to find a 9 inch deep coin. But if you want a pull tab, you might try 22.5 single frequency......

Yes ... either detector just wont see it.
It is very perplexing as I would think either one in factory coin mode would hit it with ease.
I will probably sell one of these high end detectors but want to give each a fair shot.

With the V3 I am using factory coin mode ... set sensitivity to max ... tried TX boost ... tried single freq (high).
Pinpoint the same as all metal ... tried it.

Yes ... lower conductivity better to use higher frequency however ...
Higher frequency also equals less depth in most soils and a lower freq would penetrate the ground deeper.
Or am I all wet here?

I chose a pull tab because it has about the same conductivity as gold rings.
I did not want to bury a gold ring and leave it for a few years.
If a detector can not detect a 9" pull tab what makes you think it would detect a 9" nickle?
This is a like for like test ... same target ... in the same ground ... been there for years.

The LOBO STvhas no problems hitting it.
That is what gets me!

I am interested as to why neither V3 or ET sounds off as well. Will be following along until figured out. I am in the market too and these kind of posts alarm me as some of my cheaper/older technology detectors do this with ease quite often. My only guess is improper GB. Good luck!

Hi William, I just got my V3 back from Oregon as a V3i so have not really had a chance to tune my settings but i have a day at the beach planned for next week and i will be digging holes in the sand and planting some targets. I spent quite a lot of time fine tuning my V3 and found that choosing a lower number filter (usually 7.5 band) a slower recovery speed (usually 40) and lowering the ground tracking speed (25 i think) were the things that helped me get best results for my swing speed. I would then set my gain at about 12 to start and would set my discrimination and all metal at the highest the area would stand and then back them off just slightly if i saw erratic behavior. I would use the gain as a real time control as i hunted, if it was running quiet i would sneak it up, if it got noisy i would lower it. I'm in Port Aransas so not far away from you and mainly detect the beach, i could run my V3 at discrimination 87, all metal 70 and gain 13 with my 950 coil and hit quarters at 8-9 inches but never really measured what depth i could detect ring pulls, living at the beach makes me wonder why no one has invented ring pulls that dont fall off ???

So hopefully after tying a couple of gold rings to some fishing line and burying them at different depths i will be able to set my V3i the way i want it, i will try a ring pull too, if i can find one that is :clapping:

I see a LOT of detectorists here at the beach in Port Aransas and the one thing that varies so much is swing speed, some look like they are trying to swat away mosquitoes and others go so slow i think i may need to call a paramedic, i think the V3 is very sensitive to swing speed and getting great depth ( and a better target ID) is really dependent on matching the machine to how you move, and if you move fast slow it down.

Well ... one of the replies got me thinking about discrimination.
I was running the LOBO ST with no discrimination cause the area where the tab is buried is clear of all trash and I wanted max depth and sensitivity.

Hello Mr. Murphy ... (Murphy's law)

Somehow a very small lock washer (about a #4) got right on that spot just under the grass and on top of the soil.
Now the larger coils on the E-Trac and the V3 could not detect that small ferrous washer.
The Tesoro LOBO ST running with no discrimination saw it as a very valid target as it was designed as a gold detector and detects small things.

So ... mystery solved.
Now ... none of my detectors will detect that pull tab.
Guess I need to dig it up and replace it with a quarter.

Thanks to everyone that responded with suggestions and I apologize for all the fuss.

Julien, First off 40 is a fast recovery. The setting is not recovery but recovery delay. I tested the V3i's at South Padre and found higher sensitivities were no problem and this is what gives the depth not the Rx. I did have the best luck with the 9.5. Rob

If you are using the V3 in coin mode you are discing out a pull tab for the most part I believe. Try coin and jewelery mode. Yazoo

Good eye Yazoo,[attachment 162967 eye5.gif] I didn't notice he was hunting in coin. DUH If he's in coin he won't get +26 to +50. My square tabs are +47 - +49. Try Hi Pro all tabs should read.........Rob

Yes your right Rob, 40 is for a faster recovery delay, i wrote that incorrectly. I looked through my notes and the reason i settled on 40 for the beach was it 'felt' better. Never been too concerned with depth here because there is so much beach and so many people dropping stuff :)

I managed an hour on the beach last night with the V3i and its certainly different to the V3, at least for me it is. I wont hijack this thread though.

V3 IN COIN PROGRAM IS DISCRIMINATING PULLTABS OUT. TRY C/J OR HI/PRO OR RELIC OR A CUSTOM PROGRAM - MAKING SURE TO ACCEPT PULLTAB TARGET RANGE. TRY MIXED MODE WHILE EXPERIMENTING - TRY ALL METAL. TRY LOWER FILTER SETTINGS/SWEEP SPEEDS/ RECOVERY DELAY/ SAT AND HGHER SENSITIVITIES(BUT ALWAYS RUN STABLE). I THINK ITS A VALID TEST AND LOTS CAN BE LEARNED - HH.

Hello Willie;
I just seen post here tonight and was thinking that with your V3 in the factory "coin" mode setting you said it will not detect the pulltab. The reason is you would have alot more rejection in "the factory coin mode only" You would find coins and some silver rings but you would reject most pulltabs and gold rings, and gold jewelry.
If you want to find pulltabs and gold rings, coins and other jewelry items then you need to run in coins & jewelry mode where there is less rejection.
Anytime you want to find gold rings you will have to dig pulltabs too.
Hope this helps ; ;) Jim D
