Need some help with adjusting my 705

Digger 45

Active member
I have a 705 with the 5x10 DD coil, the problem is my ground balance # is 8 i run auto balance, tracking, i don't seem to be getting the depth over 4". I have read Randy's book several times but still not getting better on depth. Running sensitivity at 15 to 18 over that a lot of chatter.

I can't us the concentric coil at all, no adjustment will settle it down. Wondering that maybe i should go back to factory settings and do everything manually.

Any help would be appreciated

Noise cancel every time before starting, with high mineralizing soil only the DD coil will work, in reading they say to use a DD coil if under 25 well i run about 8 to 10 and never higher.

IMO, you suffer with that 5x10" because, by design it is depth limited by it's width, yet it still has a footprint equal to half of a 9" concentric.
Again IMO, you'd be further ahead with a 10.5" DD, and would probably even gain depth with the 6"DD, though you'd sacrifice 2/5ths of your coverage. If trash density is sparse enough to be navigable with the 5x10", then the 10.5" DD would fair no worse, and should gain depth as well w/o the coverage loss.

Prospector Mode is yet another option that you could investigate. Utilizing the Iron Mask feature you can knock out most iron, but still see all non-ferrous targets. So if the non-ferrous trash levels are relatively low, it could prove to be a genuine boon!

When I hear the word 'chatter' I always wonder if EMI is the culprit.

Thats what I think too.

I can get nickels 8" plus with my eliptical.

Like OldLonghair says try prospecting mode...thats a really great mode for jewelry if your ok with digging a bit more....youll get more...
Dont set your threshold to high....just audible is enough

Thanks its all worth a try, i know in the areas i hunt there is silver but i suspect it is deep, will try prospector mode

Old Longhair makes a good point about using prospecting mode. I use the 5x10" HF when targets are not too deep but for deep targets my best success has been with the 9" MF concentric in prospecting mode. Sweep slowly and you will hear a lot of targets but you will soon be able to tell if you are over a coin. Coins just sound better than nails or wire. If I'm getting some shallow iron, I just move the iron mask up a bit. You can find a lot of small coins like silver dimes that others have not been able to detect because they are too deep.
