I just received my Surfmaster PI Dual Field. I looked at White's website and they say the unit is waterproof to 100'. I'm not even going to come close to that. What's scary is there is absolutely nothing in the manual about setting it up for diving. There's no way I can see any combination of the supplied rods will make the length short enough that I can dive with it comfortably. It does talk about hip mount but that's still touted as an option when wading. Nothing in the CD either about diving with it.

HELP!!! I can rig or make something to use when diving but I am beginning to think White's never intended this machine to be used when for diving...just wading in the surf.

The other disappointment was there is absolutely no specification sheet that comes with the unit. Never seen that before. Weight, dimensions, frequency...all the good stuff is somewhere in most manuals. Not in this one. Thanks in advance. Jim

He go Jim, best set-up for the White's units I've seen. Other brands too. Check out the link and OBTW, I've used their shafts and they are NICE!

Dude, have you been to the White's web site? All the information you need is right there. Maybe this will help:

Thanks all. It's a brand new unit. I have been to the website but didn't see that spec sheet you posted. I'll look for it. Appreciate the help. GH you are always helpful. Jim

If you look on the bottom of the control box there is a space for a belt to slide through to hipmount the unit (belt not included).
The Surf Dual Field is a Pulse Induction Unit, it does not operate on a frequency and it weighs 5 lbs.
To dive with the unit remove the middle rod. If you feel that is too long you can purchase a 15" lower fiber dive rod for $9.95, which is 3" shorter than the rod that comes with the unit. Or you can purchase a dive rod kit for $39.95 which includes a dive rod handle (msrp $39.95), 15" dive rod (msrp $9.95), arm cuff (msrp $9.95) and hardware (msrp $3.15 and $1.45).

Thanks Andrea. That's good info. But with the price of the components and having good tools in my shop, it looks like I will build yet another shaft and handle. I do plan to hip mount. Did it with my first Garrett and every machine since. Maybe Minelab with their worthless S rod on the Excalibur are not the only manufacturer that sells units new that need modification immediately. Jim

Why do we gotta bash the s shaft that Minlab uses as well as every other manufacture ??
Just my thoughts
as I don't use it either I use an Anderson shaft on my Excalibur
but your question was asking about your new whites and ends with bashing about the s shaft on the Minlab
just wondered?
Good luck with your new Machine
keep us posted on how you do with it,
John

I didn't only bash Minelab. I was generally pointing out the absurdity of Whites, Minelab, and Tesoro. None come, after the price you pay, with a functional shaft. I finally ended up using the straight shaft that came with a Garrett Seahunter and modify the last section of each of the above detectors shafts so they will all fit into that single straight Garrett shaft. That works fine for wading.
I dive so all of the aforementioned units I also use in a diving configuration. The Whites PI doesn't even come with a dive shaft. You can order it for more dollars if you like. The dive configuration for the Minelab and the Tesoro units are of such length that you have to located a signal, lay the detector down and swim forward, try to recover the signal, reach back and get the coil and re sweep and so on. I don't really care who makes the machine. For the price that is asked it ought to come ready to use without buying extra things. Maybe when you order you should get a choice of wading configuration, diving configuration, or both. That way you'll only pay for the one(s) you need. Frankly, I haven't heard from anyone on any of the forums that they are satisfied with any "S" shaft.
I made a dive shaft for the White's today. I'll get a picture of it and post it. Nothing special or expensive. But it will work fine. Jim
