Need some help from the ring experts.

Since many of you find rings like I find zincs, let me relate this story.

Last week was freshwater wading and found what I believe is a junk ring of the same basic class as a mood ring, but it is not a mood ring. I found the ring with a Fisher Excel ID which has a numerical target indentifier that is quite accurate, and this ring reads out at a +16. Zincs typically read +21 and nickels +10.

The ring is silver in color, and has the size #7 stamped inside, and showed slight yellow tarnish on the inner band which cleaned up easily with common solver polish. The outer band of the ring is covered in what appears to be clear plastic over a somewhat diamond pattern beneath.

Previously I had performed some gold target tests with the Excel which may be seen here http://www.findmall.com/read.php?35,200353,200353#msg-200353. Take note that one of the 14K YG rings read very close numerically to this one. I did perform a specific gravity test on it, you know... hold in palm of hand .... bounce it up and down...repeat to oneself..."gee sure doesn't feel heavy enuff to be gold".

Now being that this is driving me slightly crazy, I drug out the kid's BH QDII and the ring reads as a Tab, got out the trusty CZ20 and she reads as a solid mid-tone. So I have confirmed the Excel as accurate at +16.

So my thoughts are, it is not silver, it is not silver over copper. And here is where I seek guidance from the "Lords of the Rings". What type of either tone or VDI do you usually get for these types of junk rings, mood rings etc.???

Those kinds of rings can and do vary widely as to how they read, like bubbled up zinc pennies. Usually they are fairly high on the numeric scale (or tonal scale for machines like my Excalibur) and close to a zinc penny. But because they are usually a composite of something like maybe zinc coated in chrome or tin, you get a mixed signal that can throw it off from the primary metal. And then add the plastic coating and you get some salt and corrosion trapped in between, so it skews it more. I think your comparison with a mood ring is accurate.

It looks like on the inside that whatever it's plated with is coming off. I wouldn't think it was nickel...more likely zinc or magnesium with a chrome plating or maybe nickel plating.
