Need some good advice on a lost ring...

AMG

New member
Hopefully some of you can help me out... this just happened and I need some quick advice.

My fiancee lost her engagement ring by the side of a highway in New Hampshire. We looked for a long time but the grass was too long. The ring is a diamond with white gold.

I know the approximate area within 100 yards by 3 yards the ring was lost in. My questions are:

1. Should I buy my own metal detector and start looking. ( It's something I would find very cool to own but I haven't really considered it as a hobby before now)

2. What $ level would I need to spend to have a realistic chance?

3. Is it realistic for a complete novice to find an above ground lost ring the first time out?

3. Should I hire someone to do this for me. ( If so, how do I find that person)

Any info or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

[size=large]Find someone with an XLT or DFX and knows how to use it. Offer a payment for thier time and a reward if they find it. The machine has an option to "learn accept". If you can find a ring very similar to the one that's lost, size-wise, metal-wise, etc., and wave it in front of the coil while the machine is in learn/accept mode, once done the machine will only beep on an item that is very similar to what has just been shown. Kind of like a hunting blood hound. That would eliminate out a lot of the trash and other unwhated items . Of course no digging will be necessary, as the ring will be sitting down in the grass or on the ground. Yep, that's a tough one.

Get a Garrett Ace 250.......it's a good beginner's machine (about $210.00) and will find the ring if it is there....but be prepared for a lot of hard work because the sides of the road are littered with all kinds of scrap metal. You might want to go back once the grasses freeze out after a couple of frosts, it will be easier to work the machine when the grass is flattened out and dead. You can hire someone, but given the conditions, it will take time.

Whatever you do, do it before the state cuts the grass, or you can say, so long, good bye, You could rent one from a dealer & he will show you how to use it. GOOD LUCK
