Need some direction on a new PC for home.

According to a friend I "need" 3.0 gigahertz or faster at least 80 gigabyte hard drive, and at least 512 megabytes of memory, front camera / USB ports, ... and I want a DVD / CD burner + a 17 to 19" LCD flat monitor.

I looked at Office Depot's web site at their E-machine D5039 which after rebate is $699.99.

Any one have a recommendation as to where to get what I want or better for about the same money within a couple hundred bucks? I'm no pencil necked tech-no geek and need your advice. Thanks.

First off. Stay away from them dammed e-machines. If you want the wal-mart of computers then there you go.

You dont NEED 3 Ghz. I have a 2.8 Ghz machine with all of what you have listed (and more) and it works well. Minimum of 1 Gb memory. With all the crap softwre that is out there today you might as well up the memory on the initial purchase instead of looking for it later.

What do you really want to spend and what will you be doing with the computer? How long do you want it to "last" without looking to upgrade. By more upfront, then you don't end up buying another machine in a couple of years.

I just ordered a modest machine for my mother-in-law and it will last her for quite some time. However, it was right around $1000.00. It was from Dell and it was a Dimension E510.

Do you run a wireless network? or wired? Are you STILL on dial up? (Sorry Vern) Please tell me you are not.

Your turn.......White Boots Boy. ;)

As stated, our needs for the home PC are very basic. Internet, little to no gaming, No need for network at home except to network my lap top wireless to the PC printer. .... and perhaps a little photo editing once I learn how.

My first computer was an E-machine when they first came out and it was made to look like Apple Computers. Since then they have been making them for Gateway, which I have had 2 and never had a problem.

My reason for buying Gateway is that they have a great support system and if you have a problem you just call them and they will spend hours working with you solving the problem on the phone and can access your computer at the same time to help you.
