Need some advice

Hello everybody. I was hoping to get some advice. When I was researching detectors, it came down to the X-Terra 705 and an MXT Pro. I didn't have the money for the MXT so I went with the X-Terra. I'm happy with it but I decided to add another MD to my arsenal so I picked up a used XLT. The XLT is way different than the 705 but I like it just as much. My question is, now that I have some money, should I sell both and get an MXT Pro?

Is it much different than the XLT in terms of functions? The XLT has way too many tweaks available, but I still love its performance. The MXT is a big difference than the 705, but overall, will it be a step up or a lateral move in terms of performance and functionality? I felt the XLT was a lateral move from the 705 and not a step up. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have mxt pro and yes its one of the best machines on the market. It will hold its own when put against any machine. Lots of coils batteries and the best customer service. Although you wont likely need it

IMHO, the mxt is easier to use and maybe deeper, without a lot of tweaking, than the xlt. Shoot, it's about 10 years newer technology than the xlt, so that has to help. I've only used the mxt ,not the pro, so can't answer that question for you. I've used the xterra 70,not the 705, and liked it and made some nice finds with it, but really like the feel and trigger pinpointing of the mxt too. If you can afford both, I suggest the mxt pro alongside your 705. Both with accessory coils to enhance their capabilities in different situations. Hope this helps. PS- I've done what you did due to lack of funds and then when I get a windfall of cash, had second thoughts about what machine to swing. Ha!! Life goes on. Have fun out there with whatever machine trips your trigger. Also just my opinion, but on a good site, any of the newer mid to top of the line machines will find stuff. HH. Bob.

I have both the pro and the 705, and I won't part with either one. I will say, I have been using the pro more often lately. I just love the accuracy of the depth read out. I also like the pinpoint feature much better on the pro. I don't use the pinpoint much with my DD's, but there are a few instances where the trigger pinpoint is nice. Just seems like the pinpoint feature works all to gather better on the pro than on the 705. I also like the wider range of VDI #'s on white's machines. They seem to lock in a little better, and of coarse with more #'s you get a more defined target ID. Down fall is that you can't cherry pick the discrimination on the pro like you can the xlt and the 705. I don't mind though because I just leave it all on and dig what I consider good targets. I can still always discriminate the non silver #'s if I am on a limited time frame and just want to try to score a few quick silvers.

The Mxt is also a lot more simple to use than the xlt. I have never had an xlt, but I had a dfx, and I was always fooling around with the programs. I liked the dfx too, but all the down time, messing with it, just wasn't worth it.
I usually take my MXT PRO out when the weather is nice and the grass isn't wet.-(do to the fact that the control box sits on the ground, and I haven't got it weather proof)
I usually take the 705 if the weather is bad, because I can fully cover the meter with a zip lock bag, and wet grass won't bother.

I personally think that the Pro goes as deep as an detector out there and probably deeper than many with the right coil.
The battery life is also amazing on the pro compared to the dfx.

A lot of rambling, but in all fairness, I would still have to say that it is a lateral move from the 705. It just comes down to personal preference of simplicity and power, or more features that may or may not benefit you on your hunt. Both are hands down top of the line machines!

Excellent information. The only thing about the 705 which seems to throw me off is the VDI #s. Since there are so few it's hard to know when to actually dig. I always know when I hit a quarter, and nickel but pennies and dimes are hard to pick out in my highly mineralized ground. I do like the fact that i can change the frequency with my coils. I think the XLT has to go and the MXT is in my future. Thanks a lot everybody!
