Taking my 10 year old grandson down to a place called Heather Grove goldmine in NC soon. I am thinking about renting a highbanker and getting a front end loader full of dirt and trying our hand at prospecting. Has anyone here ever been there? I am concerned about keeping him interested. How long will it take to process a yard of material with a highbanker. I'm a complete novice and have never found even a flake of gold. What should I take with me? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Heather Grove is a great place. It will probably take you about a half day to do a endloader full (3 yards of material). Their bags of dirt are good too. I got almost 1/4 oz. out of them last year. Nice flakes and pickers. I have a reservation from June 26 to July 12 this year. As for the youngster, it may be hard to keep his attention for too long a time. I would suggest letting him try panning one of the $15 bags of dirt. He won't lose any gold because one of the crew will repan it for him. If you are there when I am I will give you any help and info that I can. I will be in a maroon and gold 90 chevy silverado pickup from Illinois.
Good Luck, Ron
