Need Small Coil Opinions

What would be you're small coil choice for hunting "trashy" areas...the SunRay X-5 or the BBS 8 (7.5)? Thnaks for any info...Ray in Waco, TX.

Ray,
I bought a 7.5" coil and don't use it much yet. It seems to have a great response in my test garden.
By the way, you'd want a FBS not a BBS. BBS is for Sovereign, standing for Broad Band Spectrum, and FBS is for Explorers, standing for Full Band Spectrum. They aren't interchangeable.
I think I probably would have been better off with an X-5, but I can't be sure yet...
The smaller the coil, the slower the ground coverage rate, which is probably the only way to go in trashy areas. Lately, I've been trying to cover a big field, so the mighty WOT is my coil of choice.

do that the 7.5 can't do. Yet I am suprise what the 10" can do in very trashy site full of rusted crown caps and pulltabs. It all has to do with your sensitivity and how slow you swing.

Ray,
I have the WOT, stock, 8" and X5. I have tried all 4 at a very trashy, 1705 house site. The X5 has worked the best for me, what a difference! I am not a journeyman with my XS but I am pretty good with it.
IMOH, if the sites you hunt are really trashy get the X5.
Good luck
TOM

I get good depth with mine and great seperation.
Charlie

Hey Ray,
I have some areas that are just loaded with trash! I know some more good coins are in that area. I am using a five inch "accelerator" coil and it is still like a machine gun firing sweeping very slow. For some reason, I'm only getting down a few inches. After some research, reading a bunch of posts, and talking to a metal detecting club member who has one. I just ordered a 5"x8" elipital JOEY coil. I'm hoping my research and coil selection pays dividends!

Then as you remove the shallower targets away deeper targets may be picked up much easier when you go though again with a larger coil.
HH,
Greg
P.S. I've used an X-8 and a Minelab 7.5 and thought the Sunray seemed a bit more stable and crisp than the ML so I'd bet the X-5 is similar although I doubt it would go as deep as the 7.5

If you cant stabilize the 5 inch coil, your using too much sensitivity. Use semi-auto, fast and increase gain to 10. If need be, feed in some IM-15 or -14.
You wont get much depth in trashy sites but you will still be able to detct it.

Anyone know much about the excelerator 5" coil? And define what you consider a "slow" swing.
Thanks,
Ron
