Here is an online manual for your Teknetics. It's in the form of a webpage.

Does the bottom of the control housing have a square metal tube attached up the center?
If not, does it have some metal rings attached on the upper four corners with rivets?
These are two different styles, one is a rod or poll munt, the other uses straps for a body mount system.

Open up the battery compartments and check the battery clips. The Mark I uses 14 double AA batteries, and there is supposed to be a metal clip between each battery. The most common problem with those detectors were the battery clips coming lose from the case and just fallen out.
One of the best sources for parts or information for the detector is brokendetectors dot com. The owner Keith Wills bought every remaining part, detector that the Old Teknetics factory had when they folded up. He may not have a factory printed manual but I'd say he should have a PDF version of it. Also, the last time I checked he was still selling new replacement battery clips for those detectors. He also does repairs on them.

Hey Mark! Thanks for the quick response!! I mite be having to talk to u for a minute till i get this rite!! lol!.Anyways the box has a tunnel going thru the back for it looks like a square metal tube but no tube?? It does have 4 clips on the corners and straps. I think i would much rather have the box mounted to the handle!! The handle i have now is round. Do u think i mite be able to chnge this somewhat inexpensively?? Good news. All the battery holders are there and intact!! I need to go to Harbor Freight and get the AA Nicad batterys and make sure the unit works before i put money into it!! I will also try and get ahold of Broken detectors(keith) to see if i can get a manual!!! Thanks Again!! TIM

Okay, it sounds like you have one that has been converted from hand held to hip mount, I say that because it has the square metal tube up the center. A factory hip mount model doesn't have that section of tube installed on it.
Be very careful putting batteries in or out of the detector, try to hold a little pressure on the in-between battery clips until you get each row of batteries installed.
The detector will also operate just fine with regular alkaline batteries, just don't hook up the onboard charger power pack (if you have that)

The rod or shafts for those detectors are rectangle and not round! if you have the correct one and all the sections.

You stated changing the handle?
Are you talking about the handgrip on top of the control box with the push button in it?
If so then NO!
Now if your talking about changing the shaft/staff from square to round then yes you could, but you may not want to get inside the detector yourself.

From what I'm gathering it sounds like you may not have a complete detector?
