NEED INTERPRETATION HELP

Hello,

Have been using Whites MXT Tracker E-Series for several years now, but I am not out in the field
a lot. Maybe 20 hours a year couple hours at a time. I have been recently detecting a site of a long established
cider mill and it's been great. Just a bunch of modern day coins but the detector has been calling them out right on the money.
Calling out quarters, nickels, dimes. Better than 70 % accurate.

However, at this one location my detector is saying there is a $1 coin, a VDI # at 94 and it said the coin was 8 inches deep.
I dug for the coin and the detector kept saying the coin was there. VDI the same and distance was growing shorter as I dug.
After digging what should have been enough to uncover even a false target --- nothing. Yet the detector said something was there.

I broke out my Bullseye II pinpointer and swept the hole ---- nothing. I took a quarter from my pocket, buried it 2" deep in the bottom
of the hole, which was a good twelve inches deep and reswept it with the pinpointer and the pinpointer deteceted the quarter immediately.

Remove the quarter, pinpointer says nothing in the hole, yet the detector is sqawking like crazy. Also along with with the VDI 94 I get
a half a bar showing all the way to right on the meter read out and my batteries are fresh and the battery check says detector has a full charge to work with.

Surely would appreciate anyones thoughts on what might be happening.

Thank you, Sixxer54

Hi Sixxer54,
can be there is a BIG item just a few inches deeper. That deep your BE2 won't detect it. Or It's in the side of the hole and the pointer won't get it. too, as it is to far away for the BE2.

Would be very helpful if you say what coil and settings you are using in THIS case.

Hello Vito,

Thanks for the prompt reply ! The coil is Eclipse 950, coins and jewelry, used both ground and lock (TRAC).
Gain is set at the arrow (preset) on the dial and the dual control is set at #5. The ground is very dry and sandy.

Like Vito said, a big target but it could be very deep yet if the Bullseye doesn't sound off. Could be a Buick down there.....

 there will be a chance, Larry.

In this combination of settings and loop I'd do first lift the loop and see how far the target can be detected above the ground.
8 inches and more will show it will be a deep large target.
Second way would be detuned pinpoint. So if the target is larger than a coin and weird shaped it can fool the P/P and you're off a few inches.
Detuning can help to narrow it. While pinpointing the target I go closer to the target, lets say half the way, rest the loop and then release trigger and press it again.
Then I sweep again for P/P. If the result will not be as good as expected I repeat this detuning. Doing so the search field is reduced and
I can get the exact center location even of bigger items.

Could be the target is on the sides/edge of the hole.
Sounds like a big piece of junk/iron deeper. Have you tried to check it width wise with
the pinpoint mode ?
If it sounds wide likely big junk /iron target.

Thank you one and all for your replies. Applied the suggestions sent to me and I think it is a Buick,
a four door duece & a quarter. I will be back at the same area as soon as this next heat wave we're about
to have this coming week.

Stay safe, Sixxer54

Good Luck on your recovery!
