One of my co-workers started reading a Bible someone left at our work. He leaves me notes between shifts with questions. He says he doesn't have a Bible. I told him I would get him one. Thought of the Scofield study Bible. Whatta ya think?

The King James version is what I like. Also, if he's new to the Bible you might suggest he start by reading Romans. A good place to begin, Steve in so az

I know that a lot of people prefer the good ol' KJ version, but I find that I have to think so much about the translation, and what some of the words mean, that I get frustrated. When I do bible studying, I use the Life Application Study Bible which is in NIV. It breaks down individual verses and sections with suggestions on what that verse was trying to relate to the people of the day, and what it means to us today. But sometimes, I just like to read, to get a more general feel for a book, and in those cases, the Message bible is nice, because it paraphrases ideas into a more modern language.
I personally have never read the Scofield study Bible, but have heard of it. Different denominations prefer different translations and bible helps, so it might be benificial to give him a bible that you are familiar with, so that you may still be able to help him with difficult passages and thoughts.

I've used the NIV Study Bible and found that to be a very good translation that's also easy to understand. I've got a link below to their site so you can look at it. At the beginning of each book it explains all about it and outlines. Plenty of notes troughout each book with clear explanations of text.

I've also got a link to a page where you can compare various Bible translations, see what you "like"

Take care,

Joe

with Joe, and rentasquid. Nothing wrong with KJV, but the NIV is easier to understand for a new Christian. My prayers will be with this seeker!
