Need info on the Tiger Shark

May get one and went to the Tesoro website and read the manual. Those of you who use one, do I have it correct that the threshold, volume, and sensitivity are controlled by pots inside the detector that requires the case to be opened to be changed?? How useful is that? With other detecors I use I am always changing the threshold, volume and tweaking the sensitivity. I know nothing about this machine but it seems, to the uneducated, that those things one can change or adjust without opening the waterproof case are way less valuable functions to change than the one enclosed in the case. Your thoughts are aprreciated. Unless someone can help me understand the logic,of this set up, I may have to cross off the Tiger Shark as the primary choice of a new water machine. Also, why no Double D coil? Just curious.. Jim

Hi Jim

Today I went out with my Tiger Shark for a couple of hours till my left leg started cramping, it's my way of breaking in my body slowly to get used to water detecting in neck deep water. No rings found, but found 2 quarters, 3 nickles, 1 dime and one penny. This is the starting of my 9th season (bought new 2001) with the TS, this unit is stone reliable, and hot on coins and jewelery. It has never been back to the shop for any repairs what so ever, and I really like it. I set the volume, threshold and sensitivity when I first got it and have not messed with it since (just set it and forget it). All the controls on the outside the unit are all you ever need to play with. The allmetal fast is the mode to use for ground balance, when ya get it balanced, set it to motion disc. mode (I run the disc.between 3 & 4) and start hunting.I hunt fresh water lakes only,so I don't know how it does at salt water beaches.Hope this helps...............Hombre

Give mike parks a call at mission metaldetectors 763-755-9449 ask him about it .. because a guy came in who uses one and he went inside and super tuned it but it can hit thin gold chains at 5"and othewise is very deep detector and very Good one of the good tesoro models

Tesoro figured these three controls, once set, that the user would not need to ever change them, or only once in a blue moon. It does make it inconvenient if you do have to adjust one, but again, you tweek it and your done. Some have complained about this feature over the years, but those of us that use the machines have never found a need to be constantly adjusting these three controls. The Tiger is a proven work horse in fresh water, knocks out iron but hits gold rings. I routinely dig up gold rings with sometimes 3, 4 or more nails in the same scoop! I laugh now when I lift a scoop and see nail on the top of the sand in my scoop because I know there is also a goodie hidden in there someplace.

Hombre question should I adjust the controls inside the box I just picked up a TS and trying to understand
it. so homre is it possible to drop you a e-mail

Howdy true

I would install the batterys first of all, put the control plate on and do an air test on it first. You can adjust the controls as needed, on mine, I set the volume to where a shallow coin was comfortable to listen to, and not too loud. the the threshold sound be set to a low hum that is just audible. The sensitivity is the tricky part, and should be set as high as posible, but not give false signals. The sensitivity level set by Tesoro (factory setting) should be close to perfect, it only take a little bit of turning to make a big difference. Really, true, all of this is in the manual, and this post of mine is just a short version of the Quick start of the manual. Just give the Manual a read.............and shoot me a PM for any questions you may have..............Hombre

I bought a clean, lightly used one last summer. The volume and threshold were set right where I'd have set them so haven't touched them. I felt the sensitivity was a little puny so I did set that a bit higher. As mentioned above, I've gotten along just fine with the external controls since. One might have to fool with the sensitivity if it is set high enough to chatter in the field, but otherwise I think once you have it tuned to suit you, you'll seldom need or want to change it. I like to mount the box on a belt around the waist - makes the rod and coil really light.

Hombre, I read the manual I did the Quick start and ground balance I was out today and I run into a lot of rusty metal on
the beach here on Lake Erie. I put the TS in Motion Disc and discLevel between 3&4 still pick it up tried around 6 still I hear
crackling and the big pieces I still pick it up . I'd like your opinion on this if you have any help I'd really appreciate it I don't want to
raise the Disc Level to high and passover the gold should I raise the sensitivity so if you can help any info is great thanks for the response. true

Hi true

Is your TS a new machine, or used ? I'm asking this because if it is used, the previous owner may have the internal controls (sensitivity) mostly.............messed up. The sensitivity is important to get set right from the start, I did mine outside of my house away from all electrical interference, set it to where it starts chattering, then back it off until it smooths out. Instead of hunting where the iron is, try a cleaner streatch of beach. Did you dig any iron to confurm that is what you were hearing? Big iron is hard to disc out. These are just a few thoughts, also if you are running your disc. at 6.....you are disc'ing out some gold. Try some air testing with a small thin gold ring, and you will see what I mean. PM me if you care to..............Hombre
