I Found this item on a Florida Beach near Fort Matanza, which was built in 1748. I was using an indusrtial whites detector. It still sounded past the coin setting, into the silver range. To me it looks like an old piece of jewelry (possibly a pendant, or part of a ring?)with a face, but my wife thinks I am nuts.

Can 258 years on a salt water beach do that to silver jewelry?

On the shores of lake Erie....They are parts of cans someone threw into a fire and they melted. They do read up by coins at times....
That's my guess...

I would have to agree with Pulltabby. Melted pieces of aluminum register like a fifty cent piece for me all the time.
