I think JOG has got it!

That profile does look very fork like, with two tines. The type of fork that comes with a carving set, not an eating fork.

I will dig the odd iron object if I am not having much non-ferrous activity. You never know what you are missing.

On that topic, last year my MD buddy and I found several brass objects which we later determined to be musket parts, a cap from the forestock, and two brass side plates - one from an Indian trade musket. talking it over with my buddy he says that he located but did not dig 2 pipe like objects, long and narrow ferrous objects. We have not been back to dig them up.

You never know what that iron object might be!
