Need ID....Piece of Iron or ax head?

Old California

New member
Recently, Found an AX shaped object from an old site with the Spanish arriving around 1780. Originally, The area was an Indian village and eventually with the Spanish arriving became one of the main resting/trading areas between villages for both Indians and Spanish.

This iron object appears to have the same shape as a hand ax only doesn't have the hole to secure the top portion of the wooden handle, Did a Google search and can't seem to find anything related except ax shape stones used by the Indians.

Any ideas? Is it an ax head or broken piece of old iron?

Thanks for looking,
Paul (Ca)

Not sure what it is, but it's a nice looking piece.

I wonder if it could be some kind of trade exe? I wouldn't think anyone would make a wedge, shaped like a tomahawk, but it sure looks like one.

Does it have a handle hole that may be full of corrosion?

I don't know, after comparing it's size to the phones size, seems less likely to be an axe head.

Hi Paul.......A wild guess...it may be the blade off a multi bladed harrow used in olden day farming????????

Chisel for splitting wood ?????????

Try a web search for 'medieval harrows'......MattR.UK

Thanks bottlebum for your reply, And sorry for the slow reply on my part.

Even thought it's small, The shape of a tomahawk just steers me in the direction of some type of ax or something simlar? This really has me racking my noodle, Maybe you're right and it's not an ax?

Thanks again and best wishes,
Paul (Ca)

Thanks Matt,

I did a Google search and found the harrow you're talking about, This makes sense and may be one of the iron teeth used for breaking up the soil and covering up seeds.

Still, It's an old relic from an old site.

Thanks again :)
Paul
