Need ID on coin/medal found

fwcrawford

Well-known member
I went out for about an hour around an old school and wasn't finding much other than a dime and some junk.
Was about to hang it up when I got a good signal and dug this.
Needless to say I was quite surprised to find this and need some help IDing it.
It is 1 7/16" in diameter and quite heavy
It was about 3" down and has a small hole at the top of it.
Anyone got any ideas? I'm guessing it is some kind of medal or medallion due to the hole and two dates; 1914,1918.
It has got to be silver since it cleaned up so good.

Thanks for any and all help,
Felix

Evidently it is a British War Medal. Scroll down this page until you come to the first picture: http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/british_war_medal_1914_1918_1920.htm

I typed the dates 1914-1918 into Google, choose Images, and then lucked up on the pics.

If you look at the bottom rim there should be a Mans name, number and unit stamped into it.

If you post that info..and the Guys Canadian, I can give you lots of info on him.

or you can email me the info at northman@rogers.com

Please contact me as I have a collection of dug WW1 and WW2 Canadian and British Medals..and I am always interested in other peoples finds when it comes to these...always interesting to find out about the Guy

Hey Deane,
Thanks alot for all the information you gave me.
I have printed it and will keep it as a welcome addition to a great find.
From looking at what you sent me, besides the number error, I also noticed that his last name was misspelled in some parts of the form.
I guess with all that paper work back then, some errors had to occur sometimes.
Thanks again for your response and all the information,
Felix

Not a problem..it is not uncommon with any WW1 forms..from any Country to have mistakes...numbers and spelling being the most common..makes it hell for us that do research!!!!

Frist World War British Servicew Medal. 92.5% silver. Will be inscribed around the side with name, rank etc. Nice find. from the UK?

Niel..if you read my post.."Heres his info" you will see he was with the CEF ( Canadian Army) but was from the US..I have seen a few of these found at school sites here in Canada.

Many Americans joined the Canadian Army in both Wars as the US got into years after Canada did..Just like the 60,000 Canadians joined in the Civil War..and about 40,000 went to VN..it's a cross border thing.

Very odd find for the US.

Actually, I found it in the United States... Virginia around an old school yard.
Dean from Canada was very helpful in finding the information on the person it was presented to and was kind enough to even send me a copy of his enlistment papers.
See his post.

His children or grandchildren would probably be quite touched by receiving something like this back from one of their ancestors. If it belonged to my father (who is also deceased) I know it would me an aweful lot to me. The detectorists code of ethics is a good rule to follow for the advancement of the hobby - if it can be returned - it should. I know that I would try and make the effort. Anyway it's a nice find!

I may try to do it although I don't know what the odds are of finding the rightful owner/ desendants.
I found this at an old school site and don't know how long its been there.
Probably one of his desendands took it to show and tell and lost it while playing outside.

Hi Felix, Thanks for your reply. I think it's the right thing to do. I know if it was my Dad's - it would mean an awful lot to me. Regards, Erik
