Need ID on 1800's rifle butt?

Hello,This rifle butt came from an early 1800 site, Musket powder rifle for sure but it has some markings on the plate, V X X < with an arrow at the end of the markings. The pic below this post will show the markings.
Can anyone ID the markings or which make the powder rifle may be? The button is early 1800 and the tool appears to be some type of chisel minus the wooden handle maybe 1850s.
Thanks and please share your take on relics,
Paul (Ca)

Here's the markings on the rifle butt, Are these some sort of date? Appears to be an arrow pointing to the markings?
Thank you, Any help will be great!
HH, Paul Ca

The arrow looks like a British " Broad Arrow" This is the British Military acceptance mark. The numbers may relate to the unit ( 70th Regiment) It may be a Brown Bess musket butt plate.

Yup the shape is right for the Brown Bess, As you can see it has the odd pointed bit, Most butt plates have a more rounded end. This is either Rev War or War of 1812. The Bess was used from the mid 1700s up to the 1840s.
Go back and look for the rest!!!!

Manys Thanks Dean,
I new it was an older type and your research proves it to be, The site is very old so I'm very pleased to have recovered this fine relic.
Happy trails, Paul Ca

I may be able to dig up some info on the unit listed on the butt. If you can tell me the general area you found it in, I may be able to find out if this unit was posted there and when.
Dean
What was the other butt?

Thanks Dean for all of the help you've provided, I'll transfer all information to my folder for a future display.
Thanks again, Paul
