OK I think it is a lock keyhole cover, but it has many dates. It has a name on top what looks like P.W???ELLENS.K . I think the word PATENTED and the dates MAR 78 ,Mar 16.74, June 5, 1883, Dec 23.82, and it looks like CHICAGO on the bottom.

Interesting find. I see a little green on it, is it copper? The first photo looks as though it's smooth & shiny on the bottom of the inside, like there is some paste or something at the bottom.(or is it just the photo?)
